A Survey of Jazz History – The Early Development of the Modern Jazz Movement: A Musical Journey To ‘Pass It On’

Join Willie and Jacqueline and enjoy traveling through ‘America’s Classical Music,’ Jazz as they present the historic cultural evolution of the Early Development of the ‘Modern Jazz Movement’ and its innovators. This class provides a glimpse into the roots of early musical styles, which developed into the modernization of jazz during the 1940s, including some present-day artistry thrown into the mix. The class will be presented through the music of artists such as, Mary Lou Williams, James P. Johnson, W. C. Handy, Louis Armstrong, Dizzy Gillespie and many others.
The 4-week historic journey will illuminate the U.S. musical soundscape through lectures, literature, film, audio resources, and class discussion. North Carolina connected Jazz innovators will be emphasized. Students will also be encouraged to create an individual Survey of Jazz History – The Early Development Modern Jazz Movement Journal as a keepsake to “To Pass It On.”
