Testament of Youth
(United Kingdom) 2014
Testament of Youth is a powerful story of love, war and remembrance, based on the First World War memoir by Vera Britain. The story depicts the innocence of youth, love and dreams that are tragically thrown into the reality of war. Vera, her brother Edward and Vera’s fiancé, Roland, share an upper class life rarely touched by events out of their control. When Britain declares war on Germany in 1914, everything changes. As they fight to deal with the realities of this first world war, Vera’s experience is perhaps most profound in that there have been few stories that recount a woman’s perspective. She fights the war but also the prejudices and preconceived ideas about herself and the motives of one from such a privileged background.
