Christmas brings a special opportunity for staff and students at Craven Community College (Craven CC) to celebrate the gift of learning. In Career Programs, the connection between learning and the holidays has come to life in the form of a unique Christmas tree.
While traditional Christmas trees are decorated with tinsel and store-bought ornaments, the Career Programs tree is covered with yellow crime scene tape, barber shears, 3-D printed snowflakes and dozens more ornaments that were made by faculty and students to represent the numerous programs offered by the school.
The idea for the Career Programs tree began late last year when Sharon Tew, administrative assistant for Career Programs, unpacked the Christmas tree and found a sparse selection of store-bought ornaments. Feeling the tree should represent a more personal look at Career Programs, she asked faculty and students to create ornaments for the tree.
“They stepped up, but you see how big the tree is,” said Tew as she pointed to the 10- foot tree. “It takes a lot of ornaments. This year I put out an email early to them saying we need more ornaments, not store-bought ornaments, and everything has to be related to career programming. And they really stepped it up for me again this year.”
The tree represents 19 different programs with ornaments that include crime scene tape, a holster and handcuffs for criminal justice, composite snowflakes and snowmen that were 3-D printed by composites, a puppet of five little monkeys for early childhood education and metal deer that were created by machining.
“The deer are absolutely gorgeous,” said Tew.
The tree is topped with a new metal angel that was created by Tim Best, machinist faculty, and placed at the top by Jim Millard, dean of Career Programs.
“I’m proud of the work our students have done and I’m glad we have an opportunity to share that work with this beautiful tree,” said Ricky Meadows, executive director of Career Programs. “Sharon’s idea has blossomed into a showpiece that gives our friends and colleagues another reason to gather around the tree and celebrate all the great work we do here, while also having a little bit of fun in the process.”
Other ornaments include welded candy canes, dangling sparkplugs from automotive, dumbbells from physical education, a circuit board for electronics, dollar sign ornaments for accounting, a floppy disk for IT, scissors from cosmetology and a mask from esthetics.
“We’re really proud of it, and the thing that I like about it is that it represents all of career programs,” said Tew. “Everything we offer is there. You can see it represented in some way, or shape, or form, or fashion on this tree. And it was a pleasure putting it together. I enjoyed it.”
