Craven Community College turned a page toward the future Monday, Feb. 5 with the grand reopening of the Godwin Memorial Library and Testing Center. Located on the second floor of Barker Hall on the New Bern campus, the remodeled and modernized facility hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony that included a tour of the renovated facilities, a statue unveiling and light refreshments.
Designed to promote a welcoming environment, access to technology and collaborative work areas, the remodeled library includes plenty of seating, tables, charging stations, study areas, a teacher resource room and a modular multipurpose room.
“The students love it in here,” said Cathy Campbell, Craven CC director of library services. “They enjoy sitting at tables and working together. The new lighting makes everything so much brighter. Plus, they are able to charge all their electronic devices and have access to more computers.”
Two small study rooms and a new multipurpose room each have a 55-inch large screen TV that may be connected to student laptops for collaborative projects. The multipurpose room also has white boards and furniture on wheels so the students can put together a table big enough for 12 people.
The enlarged testing center will allow multiple tests to be administered simultaneously in both group and individual settings. The center now includes three labs for both large and small group testing, three individual testing rooms and a reception area.
The testing center has been set up for universal access. Wide aisles and ample space between computer tables allow students, faculty, staff and guests to maneuver comfortably between tables. Each computer station includes an adjustable height monitor. The individual testing and study rooms offer adjustable lighting to accommodate a wide range of individuals, and motion sensors can automatically turn lights on and off.
The ribbon cutting included the unveiling of a statue donated to the college by Jon and Karen Segal. The new statue, entitled “Two Kids on a Bench” by Max Turner, will be located on the second floor of Barker Hall, just outside the library entrance.
As always, Godwin Memorial Library is open to the public and library cards are free. More than 1,200 DVDs and over 15,000 books are available for checkout.
