Since 2007, the Lifetime Learning Center (LLC) at Craven Community College (CCC) has been offering state, regional and international group travel trips. In its upcoming new season of programing, LLC added a new destination category called “U.S.A. Adventures” where travelers can experience other regions in the United States. The first trip in this category will be in September to the Grand Canyon and other Arizona destinations.
“Based on feedback from our LLC participants, we decided to offer a trip to the Grand Canyon,” said Jennifer Baer, coordinator for CCC Foundation outreach and the LLC. Baer said travelers will be able to explore the vistas of the canyons by train, trolley and motorcoach bus. They will experience popular destinations in Arizona, such as Sedona and Jerome, as well as some historic landmarks.
Former CCC employee and retiree Ann Miller Mooney has travelled with LLC several times. “The trips are always very interesting and well-organized,” said Mooney. She has enjoyed trip itineraries, and has appreciated that all the details are taken care of so she can relax and enjoy the traveling experience. Mooney will be taking the September trip, her first ever to the Grand Canyon area. “As a retiree, I love the New Bern area because of the many learning and entertainment activities that organizations like the college offer,” added Mooney.
In its recent season, the LLC travel program has included trips to Old Salem and Seagrove Pottery Festival in Winston-Salem, N.C., garden tours of Maymont Park in Virginia, Longwood Gardens in Pennsylvania, Hillwood Estate in Washington, D.C., and an international cruise along the Rhine River from Switzerland to the Netherlands.
An information session for the September 28-October 3 “Great Trains and Grand Canyons” trip will be held on Tuesday, May 13 at 6:30 p.m. in Room #102 of the Bosch & Siemens Advanced Manufacturing Center (AMC) on the New Bern campus. The cost of the six-day trip is $2,269 per person (double occupancy). The registration deadline for this trip is May 30.
The mission of the LLC is to offer diverse learning experiences here in Craven County or at other venues in eastern N.C., the United States and abroad. In addition to travel, LLC programs include three series: performing arts, library book discussion, and international movies. As an outreach program of the CCC Foundation, the LLC is able to offer and host events through a donation from corporate sponsors Mr. and Mrs. Terry Tait of Raymond James Financial Services, Inc. Net proceeds from LLC programs help to support the Foundation. The Foundation is a nonprofit organization that provides scholarships to CCC students and funds other educational initiatives at the college.
