Craven Community College’s (Craven CC) Small Business Center (SBC) kicks off the Fall Entrepreneur Series on Tuesday, August 15, 6-9 p.m., with a “How to Start a Business” workshop. Presenter Wanda Bennett has helped entrepreneurs and small businesses during her 10 years at Carteret Community College. Currently she is the owner of Work on Wonderful Consulting, LLC, which focuses on management, leadership and business development.
In addition to workshops and seminars, the SBC offers one-on-one counseling to start-ups and small businesses at no charge. The SBC is part of the Small Business Center Network which has 60 locations at the state’s community colleges.
Bennett said that not leveraging SBC training would make it more difficult for entrepreneurs to navigate small business information and resources provided by the state, U.S. Small Business Administration, N.C. Rural Center, and other organizations that could be helpful to start-ups and small businesses. “The Small Business Center Network is invaluable and is accessible to all NC citizens,” said Bennett.
Bennett will also present on Tuesday, August 22. The topic will be, “Develop your Business Plan.” The workshop will assist participants with this critical step in starting or growing their businesses. Participants will learn how to turn ideas into a solid plan for financing and long-term success.
Lee Hodge of Ward & Smith, P.A., will help entrepreneurs understand the business structure and other legal considerations on Tuesday, September 12.
On Thursday, September 21, Roxanne Reed, general business advisor for Carolina Small Business Development Fund, will teach participants how to prepare for seeking capital to start or expand their businesses.
Now that entrepreneurs have the foundation of business planning, they will learn how to use marketing to find customers on Thursday, October 5, from Steve Carver, 360 Management. Carver will inform participants on how to use market research and analysis in developing a marketing plan.
With the marketing planning under way, Roxanne Reed follow up to educate entrepreneurs about retention marketing strategies in her workshop, “Marketing Your Small Business—Keeping Your Customers,” on Thursday, October 12.
On Wednesday, October 25, Rhonda High, NC Department of Revenue, will help participants understand tax compliance in her workshop, Business Tax Essentials. High will cover sales and use tax, employee withholding and other tax requirements.
Basics of Bookkeeping will be held on Thursday, October 19. Workshop leader will be Kelly Michaud of Solid Rock Accounting Services who will give participants an overview of basic accounting and how to properly record financial transactions.
Another event helpful to small business owners is the monthly roundtables that cover a specific topic and allows for in-depth peer discussions. On Wednesday, August 30, from 7:30-9 a.m., Bob Mackowski of Open Aperture Photography will teach participants how to use video marketing.
