Founded in 1920 by American veterans returning home from France, The Society of 40 & 8 are committed to promoting charity and patriotism within their local communities. The Society of 40 & 8 Voiture No. 589, New Bern’s local chapter of the society, embodied their aim of charity on Tuesday, February 26 when they gifted a very generous donation to the Craven CC Foundation. This donation will be used to fund the newly established “The Society of 40 & 8 Scholarship.”
The 40 & 8 is an independent, invitation-only honor society of American veterans and service members across the United States. Originally part of the American Legion, the Society of 40 & 8 Voiture No. 589 became an independent society in 1960 and is still an affiliate of the American Legion Post 24 located in New Bern. The ultimate purpose of the society is to uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States while also promoting the well-being of veterans, their widows, widowers, and orphans. The society actively participates in charitable endeavors such as programs that promote child welfare and nurse training.
“The Society of 40 & 8 Scholarship” was established because of the organization’s commitment to promoting the training of nurses. It is an annual $1000 scholarship and will be open to any Craven County resident who is pursuing an Associate Degree in Nursing. To be considered eligible for the scholarship, the student must be enrolled in a minimum of 12 credit hours and have at least a 3.0 GPA. Students who are pursuing a nursing degree from Craven CC can look for this scholarship in the fall of 2019.
