The State of North Carolina requires medical residential facilities to have recreational activities for residents. Learn how to lead these programs in this class, through lecture and hands-on activities. Class completion plus 25 volunteer hours at an assisted living or Nursing home will be required to complete this program.

Requirements

Cardio and EKG Technician

Study cardiology topics and engage in labs to learn how to perform EKG examinations/stress/holter monitors. Optional national certification (NHA) cost $129 will be proctored at Craven Community College for those who complete the course. Course cost consists of tuition and supply fees.

Requirements

  • No textbook required. 1 1/2 inch notebook binder needed.
  • Students must wear red lab coat to all classes and field trip.
  • Students must present high school diploma or GED to Instructor at first class session.
  • No criminal infractions on background history per NHA

Central Sterile Processing Technician

The Central Sterile Processing is a dynamic and fast paced environment with work that is challenging highly technical, complex and rewarding. The Central Sterile Processing Technician is an essential part of the surgical team and have a vital impact on the smooth operation of the many departments they provide services. Patient safety and infection preventions start with Central Sterile Processing.

Classes will include basic fundamentals, Instrument identification, basic sterile processing, labs and clinical rotations. This will introduce students to the technical skills and the primary responsibilities of a Central Sterile Technician and prepare the student for employment in a hospital, ambulatory care and Physicians’ office setting. Completion of this class will provide advance knowledge and skills and hands-on practical application that will prepare the student for the workplace and the certification exam through the CBSPD (Certified Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution) or through IAHCSMM (International Association of Healthcare Central Service Material Management) with continued hands-on hours that can be completed post-employment. Course cost consists of tuition and supply/insurance fees.

Max. seating: 12 students

Prerequisites:

  • Letter of recommendation due at registration. Send electronically to jenkinsk@cravencc.edu
  • 18 years or older
  • Picture ID (driver’s license or other official ID)
  • High School Diploma or equivalent. High school diploma, GED or college transcripts are due at time of registration. Admin staff will place copy with the registration form.
  • Placement test (Reading and Math Skills). Placement test required. Students must send an Email to Katie Jenkins to schedule the placement test at no charge to the student. Testing will be available during business hours by appointment. Current official picture ID required at the time of the test in the academics center on both campuses.
  • Current shot Record must document on health form: Student Health Form (pdf)Read pages 1-3. Complete pages 4-8.
    • (2) MMR or titer
    • Varicella titer or 2 Varicella injections
    • 2 step PPD/TB test current through March 31, 2022
    • TDAP booster or Tetanus documentation
    • FLU shot
    • Hepatitis B series-all 3 shots documented or 2 shots completed prior to Oct 1, 2021 or titer
    • Bring documentation to the instructor; Instructor will provide more details in class.

  • At first class session, drug testing deadline and procedure will be provided.
  • Professional non-skid shoes for clinicals; instructor will provide details regarding approved foot wear.

Medication Aide

Gain the credential needed to work as a Medication Aide in skilled nursing homes. This 24-29 hour class (Fees: $78-133) will prepare you for the NC Medication Aide Registry exam. This popular class is limited to 10 seats. Nurse aide credentials will also be required to work in a skilled nursing home as a medication aide.

Requirements

  • Textbook Information: Medication Administration book is only available through the college bookstore. Approximate cost: $20.
  • High school diploma or GED required. Bring copy to first class
  • Students must wear White pressed lab jacket to all classes; no shorts, no jeans.
  • Book and High School diploma/GED required first day of class.
  • Exam Fee: $59 payable to Pearson Vue after completion of course

Nurse Aide I

NC Nurse Aide I training at Craven CC is designed to provide skills essential to provide direct patient care under the direction of a licensed nurse. Nurse aide jobs are in high demand and upon completion, job opportunities at various medical facilities such as hospitals, skilled nursing homes, assisted living facilities, home health agencies and private offices or agencies are available. This class includes class/lab/clinical and the required state testing will be available on the New Bern Campus.

Required Materials (additional charges for students)

  • 100 Index Cards of student’s choice
  • Scrubs: Wear daily starting on first day of class. White solid top-may wear white long sleeve shirts under scrub top; Black scrub pants; solid white or black lab jacket only. Required first day of class

North Carolina Nurse Aide I employees may qualify for the Nurse Aide II credential by completing an approved program. Advanced nursing skills for employment in hospitals, nursing homes, or home health agencies are taught via class, lab and clinical/simulation.

If your NC Nurse Aide 2 listing has expired in the past 24 months, this class provides competency testing to re-list with the NC Board of Nursing. Registration is required and due by the stated deadlines. Class size is limited. Last competency evaluation and written examination is conducted 2.0 hours to class ending time stated.

Program Requirements

Current NC Nurse Aide I status required to be eligible for this competency evaluation and NC Nurse Aide listing with expiration less than 24 months.

24 hours class/lab required with online work. Email/internet connection required.

Learn the skills to assist pharmacists in retail and medical practices. Preparation for the national PTCB (Pharmacy Technician Certification Board) exam is included in the program. Exam fee is an additional fee of $129.00 paid to PTCB. Course cost consists of college tuition and supply fee.

Phlebotomy Technician

Phlebotomy Training

Phlebotomy – drawing blood – is a rewarding professional job.  You will learn venipuncture, basic lab skills and you will be prepared for an optional national certification exam (NHA). The fee for the exam is $129.00, payable to National Healthcareer Association (NHA). In addition to class time, the clinical rotation requires a flexible daytime schedule as clinical locations are available.  Course cost consists of tuition and supply/insurance fees.

Program Requirements:

  • High school diploma or GED copy required.

Physical Therapy Technician (Aide)

Learn entry-level rehabilitation and therapy procedures including body systems so you can work under the direction of a licensed Physical Therapist. Internship hours will require daytime availability of 25 hours which may be approved for the meeting the Craven Community College Physical Therapy Assistant admissions requirement.
