International Students Information

Welcome to Craven Community College

What is an International Student?

Craven Community College defines an international student as a non-United States (U.S.) citizen residing or intending to reside as a non-immigrant in the United States for the purposes of obtaining an academic degree conferred by the college; i.e. those seeking an F1 student visa.

Applying Outside US

This is a student who resides outside the United States. The student wants to apply to receive an I-20. With this I-20, the student will apply for an F-1 student visa to come to Craven Community College and study as a full-time student.

Transfer Active I-20

This is a student who is currently in the United States studying at an institution with a current I-20. The student wants to apply to Craven Community College to transfer his or her I-20 to study as a full-time student.

Change of Status

This is a student who is currently in the United States with an immigration status, however, the student wants to apply to receive an I-20. With this I-20, the student will apply with US Customs and Immigration Services for a change of status from his or her current status to F-1 student visa. If the change is approved, the student plans to study at Craven Community College as a full-time student. We do not have an application deadline for an applicant to receive an I-20 to apply for a change of status.

Application to Extend/Change Nonimmigrant Status: I-539 Form

How to Apply

+ Step 1: Complete Residency Determination Service (RDS) interview process

RDS is used to determine the tuition rate a student will pay to attend a North Carolina college or university. As an F1 student, the state of North Carolina requires us to apply out of state tuition rates.

  • Residency Interview
  • Guide for completing residency interview (pdf)

+ Step 2: Complete General Admissions Application

  • Craven General Admissions Application
  • Once completed Email International Students.

+ Step 3: Provide Official Transcripts

In order to attend Craven Community College, a student must provide proof that they have completed a secondary school that is equivalent to a high school education within the United States. Students can also submit their post-secondary transcripts to receive transfer credit and waive any placement test requirements.

High school or secondary transcript (required for all students)

  • Official transcripts must be mailed directly from the institution, or it can be delivered in person as long as we received it in a sealed envelope.
  • Transcripts not written in English must include a certified English translation.
  • All transcripts must include a definitive graduation date.

Post-secondary transcripts

  • All transcripts must be evaluated by one of the following agencies listed on the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services website.
  • The evaluating agency must send their results directly to our school, or they can be delivered in person in a sealed envelope.

+ Step 4: English Proficiency

A student must demonstrate English proficiency through one of the following:

  • Transferable English Composition Course: must be completed at a US college or university with a minimum grade of “C” or better grade.
  • Native English Speaker: Must be documented by high school or college transcript.
  • TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) with a minimum score of 500 on the paper-based test, 173 on the computer-based test, or 59-60 TOEFL iBT for academic admission.

+ Step 5: Finances

Applicants must be financially self-supporting while studying in the United States. A student may choose to use a sponsor, or study as an independent student. A student is considered to be independent if they are using their own income to provide 100% of their support while staying within the United States. This includes room and boarding expenses.

Applicants who are staying with a sponsor must complete the I-134 (Affidavit of Support) form, and attach an original letter(s) from each sponsor’s bank. All letter(s) must be printed on bank stationary and reflect that their current account balance is at least $16,400. If other dependents will accompany the F1 student, they must include an additional $5,000 for the student’s spouse, and $2,000 per child. Scholarship funds can be used to offset the cost of attendance. The agency providing the scholarship must provide proof of funding directly to Craven Community College. Furthermore, a letter from the sponsor’s employer showing their annual salary can be used as a means of support. This will be reviewed on a case by case basis. View Sample Letter.

An Affidavit of Support is not required if a student is planning on supporting themselves, however, the student is required to provide an original letter from their bank showing a current account balance of $28,000. Applicants who are sponsoring dependents must include an additional $5,000 for their spouse, and $2,000 per child. Scholarship and grant funding can be used as a source of income for the requirements listed above. The agency must provide proof of funding directly to Craven Community College.

Housing

Because Craven Community College is a commuter campus with no on-campus housing available, international students are expected to make their own housing arrangements. Students can begin apartment searching through the following resources:

  • Apartment Finder
  • Apartment Guide
  • ABODO Apartments
  • ApartmentList.com for New Bern
  • ApartmentList.com for Havelock
  • Hotpads – New Bern
  • Hotpads – Havelock
  • Zillow – New Bern
  • Zillow – Havelock

Employment

Employment opportunities for international students are very limited. The single source of employment initially is restricted to on-campus employment. There are very few jobs available on-campus. You cannot work off-campus in any capacity without specific authorization from the International Student Advisor and Department of Homeland Security. This permission is withheld until you have completed your first year of college work. Applicants cannot assume that monies from employment will be available to them in the US. Working without approval means immediately the student is “out-of-status” with no opportunity for reinstatement. You will be ineligible for any other benefits of your status.
