New Bern Campus Testing Center

Welcome to the Craven Community College Testing Center! It is our goal to provide a secure and supportive testing environment for our current and future students, as well as our local community. To do this, all test takers must abide by the following rules:

  • Testers must prove their identity by showing at least one valid photo ID, such as a driver’s license, before all testing sessions (some tests require two forms of ID)
  • Testers may not bring children into the Testing Center or leave them unattended outside the test area
  • Testers may NOT bring food or drinks into the Testing Center
  • The Testing Center has a limited number of lockers that can be used to secure your items, please leave them secured in your car or at home
  • Testers will lock all personal items, including electronic devices, cell phones, watches, coats, purses, bags, and jackets in the secure storage area prior to entering the testing room
  • Testers may not wear hats or hoods during testing (except religious head coverings)
  • Testers may not use calculators on tests unless it is a calculator link built into the test or unless a proctor explicitly states they may
  • Testers must use calculators and scratch paper provided by the Testing Center
  • Testers will turn in proctor issued paper, pencils, and calculators upon test completion
  • If a tester needs ADA Accommodations due to a disability, they should contact Disability Services prior to scheduling any testing appointments. Please visit the link for more details.

Proctor Services

The Testing Center administers a variety of different tests. There is essential information available regarding each test; including testing requirements, fees, restrictions and more. Proctoring fees are non-refundable.

+ ASE Testing

ASE is short for the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence. ASE promotes excellence in vehicle repair, service, and parts distribution.

To register for a ASE exam

  • Register online through ASE or by phone at 1-877-346-9327
  • Payment required
    • Test Fee: Pay the ASE exam fee before the day of testing through ASE
    • Proctor Fee: There is no proctor fee for this exam
  • Schedule your appointment
    • Call the Testing Center at (252)639-9306
    • When you call you must have your Eligibility Qualifiers ID number available

What to bring on test day

  • You will be required to present a valid photo ID

+ BLET Testing

Candidates applying for BLET must meet certain Commission Standards, one of which is to possess a 10th grade reading level. To test this all Craven CC BLET candidates are required to take the TABE.

Payment required

  • There is no fee for Craven CC students
  • There is a $5.00 proctor fee for non Craven CC students
    • You can pay the proctor fee with cash the day of testing at the Testing Center or at the Craven CC Business Office in advance with a credit card
    • You must bring your receipt the day of testing

+ CLEP Testing

CLEP General & Subject Examinations: The College-Level Examination Program® (CLEP®) is a rigorous College Board program that allows students of a wide range of ages to demonstrate their mastery of college-level material in introductory subjects and earn college credit. CLEP offers examinations that represent courses typical of the first two years of college study. Colleges may award 3 to 12 semester hours of college credit for successful completion.

Registration for CLEP exams is a three-step process

  • Register
    • Register online through College Board
  • Two (2) payments are required
  • For all candidates, the cost of a CLEP exam is currently $109.00
    • Test Fee: Pay the $89.00 CLEP exam fee before the day of testing through College Board
      • CLEP exams are free for the first attempt to active duty and active reserve members
      • Upon payment, you will receive a ticket number; you must bring your ticket number the day of testing
    • Proctor Fee of $25.00: DANTES-funded military candidates are required to pay the proctor fee if taking the exam at a college test center
      • The administration fee is waived for the DANTES-funded military candidates when testing at an on-base, base-sponsored, or fully funded site
      • You can pay the proctor fee with cash the day of testing at the Testing Center or at the Craven CC Business Office in advance with a credit card
      • You must bring your receipt the day of testing
  • To schedule your appointment

  • Two (2) acceptable forms of ID are required in order to take an exam
  • Proctor fee or receipt from the Craven CC Business Office
  • Your CLEP ticket number

Other information

  • Exam time varies depending on exam selection, however most exams are 90 minutes
  • Purchased CLEP vouchers will expire 6 months after the purchase date
  • There is a 3 month waiting period for students who wish to retake an exam

+ Craven Community College Instructor Makeup Test

The Testing Center offers instructor make-up testing for seated, hybrid, and online classes on a walk-in basis during listed testing hours.

Walk-in Testing Hours

Fall and Spring Hours

Monday – Thursday: 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
Friday: 8:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Summer Hours

Monday – Thursday: 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Friday – Closed

+ CRC - WorkKeys & the Career Readiness Certificate Testing

How can you prove you have the necessary skills to be successful in the workplace? How can you distinguish yourself from other candidates? How can you increase your opportunity for career change and advancement?

The Career Readiness Certificate is a portable, nationally recognized credential that can help individuals get the job they want. Based on the proven ACT WorkKeys® system the CRC gives jobseekers proof of their workplace skills. WorkKeys, a system of real world workplace assessments, can act both as a tool to increase individual’s employability skills and give employers the tools necessary to plan, screen, select, train and promote the appropriate candidates. Test results can be beneficial information for many groups and organizations such as Public School Systems, local and federal government, employers, and economic strategists. You can earn a Platinum, Gold, Silver or Bronze level certification.

To register for a CRC exam

  • Call the Testing Center at (252)639-9306 to register and schedule your appointment
  • Payment Required
    • Test Fee: Pay the $42.00 CRC exam fee before the day of testing at the Craven CC Business Office
    • Individual tests are $14 per test- Applied Math, Workplace Documents and Graphic Literacy
    • You must bring your receipt the day of testing

What to bring on test day

  • You will be required to present a valid photo ID
  • Receipt from the Craven CC Business Office

Scores

  • For instructions on how to set up your personal account, go to act.org and click on LOGIN and CREATE A NEW ACCOUNT. You have access to all of your WorkKeys scores at any time. You can publicize and print a copy of your scores whenever you need.

+ DSST Testing

Dantes Subject Standardized Tests (DSST): The DSST cover both college level subject matter and vocational/technical matter. Tests are available in 37 subject areas. Colleges may award you up to 3 semester hours of college credit for each test successfully passed. The Craven CC Testing Center only offers the DSST exam to active duty and active reserve members.

To register for a DSST exam

  • Call the Testing Center at (252)639-9306 to register and schedule your appointment
  • Payments Required
    • Test Fee: DSST exams are free for the first attempt to active duty and active reserve members
    • Proctor Fee: The proctor fee is free to active duty and active reserve members

What to bring on test day

  • Two (2) acceptable forms of ID are required in order to take an exam
    • 1 must be an original, valid (unexpired), government issued photo and signature bearing identification
  • DSST account username and password (if you have previously taken a DSST exam)

  • All exams are 2 hours long and most exams are 100 multiple choice questions

+ Miller Analogies (MAT) Testing

The Miller Analogies Test (MAT) represents an excellent option for candidates applying to any of the hundreds of graduate programs that accept MAT scores for admission. The MAT consists of 120 multiple choice analogy questions.

To register for a MAT exam

  • Call the Testing Center at (252)639-9306 to register and schedule your appointment
  • Payment Required
    • Test Fee: Pay the $90.00 MAT exam fee before the day of testing at the Craven CC Business Office
    • You must bring your receipt the day of testing

What to bring on test day

  • Two acceptable forms of ID (1 government issued ID, and a secondary ID containing a photograph and signature)
  • Be able to provide social security number
  • Receipt from the Craven CC Business Office

+ Pan-Performance Assessment Network (PAN)

Craven Community College is a test site for all computer-based examinations offered through the Performance Assessment Network (pan).

These examinations include pre-employment tests for:

  • Transportation Security Administration (TSA)
  • The United States Postal Service
  • FBI (Federal Bureau of Investigations)
  • CBP (U.S. Customs and Border Protection)
  • I-9 Processing

Pearson VUE offers a wide range of industry recognized certification exams for professional careers ranging from introductory levels to experts.

+ Placement Testing

Please note each student’s academic profile is unique. Therefore, students must consult with an Academic Advisor prior to testing to ensure that the test the student is planning to take is the right one.

RISE Placement Testing

  • Placement testing will consist of two separate sessions (English and Math)
  • RISE English consists of two testing tiers and takes approximately two hours to complete
  • RISE Math consists of three testing tiers and takes approximately two to three hours to complete
  • You must make a 70 on a tier before you can move to the next tier
  • You can retest each tier ONLY one time – you must speak to an advisor before you can retest

Proctor Services

The Testing Center conducts remote proctoring of the RISE and Accuplacer placement test for students enrolling at other institutions. We charge a $5 test-proctoring fee.

We also arrange remote proctoring of the RISE test for prospective Craven Community College students at other colleges who want to enroll at our college.

What to bring on test day

  • You will be required to present a valid photo ID
  • Bring your Panther ID username and password (You will need this to start your exam)
  • You should refrain from bringing personal items to the testing center. All personal items including cell phones any other electronic devices will be stored outside the testing room during the exam.

UNC Online Proctoring Network

The Testing Center is a certified proctoring site for the UNC Online Proctoring Network. If you are taking online courses within the 17 UNC system campuses.

Other Universities

The Testing Center also proctors exams for an institution outside of the 17 UNC system campuses.

  • Have your instructor email the following exam information to CTC, prior to scheduling
    • Exam format (paper or computer based)
    • Exam duration
    • Exam availability window

+ PSI Testing Services

PSI offers proctored, computer-based test administration for the government/state licensing agencies, and certification/professional associations

To register for an PSI exam

  • For test availability and online registration, visit https://candidate.psiexams.com

Individuals wishing to take a computerized exam through PSI must register with them prior to coming to our test center. They can be reached at 1-800-733-9276.

+ Scantron

Scantron provides testing services to certification and licensure organizations, corporations, educational institutions, government agencies, and trade and professional associations. All Scantron exams are internet-based and are given via a secure, password-protected website. Candidates must bring their admission ticket or confirmation letter to the exam. The first and last name on the admission ticket must match exactly with the first and last name on the acceptable, non-expired identification. Acceptable IDs include a driver’s license, passport or government issued identification (official state identification card).

+ TABE Testing

The Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE) is a standardized basic skills assessment that will assign a grade level of 0.0-12.9 for reading, math, and language for potential students. You cannot fail the TABE. It is used as a tool to help teachers make a learning plan that will work for a potential student. The TABE is the most widely used assessment in the adult education field. All Adult Basic Education students entering the Basic Skills Program are required to take the TABE.

Q: What score do I need?

  • We do not set score requirement, however we can help you find where to locate what score you may need
  • If you are taking the CLEP, DSST or MAT test, acceptable scores are determined by the Admissions Office of school in which you are applying to

Q: How long does it take for me to receive my scores?

  • Most internet-based tests will provide unofficial results immediately after the test is completed
  • It can take approximately 2-4 weeks for the official score to reach your designated institution(s)

Q: What do I need to bring with me on test day?

  • Identification is the most important requirement that you must bring on test day
  • Some exams sponsors, such as MAT, CLEP and DSST may require two types of identification
  • Some exam sponsors also require you to bring your admission ticket or voucher
  • Please check test-day requirements for your specific exam
  • Our center will provide scratch paper, pencils, earplugs, and headphones if acceptable by exam sponsor

Q: What do I NOT need to bring with me on test day?

  • Lockers are available for testing candidates that are taking exams
  • Food, beverages, electronic devices, other prohibited materials are not allowed in the testing room
  • These items may be left in your vehicle or stored in a locker

Q: How do I pay for my test?

  • Most proctored exams have to be paid in advance online
