The Associate in Arts Teacher Preparation (ASTP) degree program serves as the foundation if you plan to complete a bachelor’s degree in education in a science, technology, education, or mathematics (STEM) related field at a four-year institution. Students pursuing the ASTP will complete 45 hours of general education coursework in English composition, humanities and fine arts, social and behavioral sciences, and natural science and mathematics. Additionally, students will complete four introductory education courses which will help them gain an understanding of what it means to be in the K-12 classroom and prepare them for the Praxis teacher certification exam.
Career opportunities for students on this educational track include:
- Middle school education – Math (grades 6-8)
- Middle school education – Science (grades 6-8)
- Secondary education – Math (grades 9-12)
- Secondary education – Science (grades 9-12)
The ASTP degree allows for the smooth transfer of courses and credits to a bachelor’s degree in education to the public and private four-year institutions in North Carolina.
