Whether you have painted in other media, or never lifted a brush, Jan Hoppe will introduce you to the basics of painting with oil paints. During the 6 week course, students will learn to start an oil painting, mix oil paints for colors and effects, and to use brushes of various sizes and shapes. Students will be encouraged to experiment and develop their own approach to subject matter. Students are asked to bring a photo to work from so that they can continue working between classes (suggested subjects are flowers, landscapes, still life displays). Odorless solvents will be used. Materials to bring to class, purchased locally or online: - Student grade oil paints* - examples: Winsor & Newton’s "Winton" or Grumbacher’s "Academy" 37 ml tube size - Titanium White, Cadmium Yellow Light Hue, Cadmium Red Medium Hue, Chromium Oxide Green or Permanent Green Light, Cerulean Blue or Cobalt Blue Hue, Burnt Umber or Raw Umber (Brown). You may purchase a set that may not include exactly these paints, nO water soluble paints. - Brushes of various sizes and shapes: Long handles, white bristles (slightly stiff). Brushes for acrylic paints will work. Suggested sizes are 1/2" wide, 3/8" wide, 1/4" wide. Flat or Bright (squared), Filberts (rounded). - Painting palette-paper type or wood. - At least 1 stretched canvas, or canvas covered panel, 9" x 12" or 11" x 14" or 12" x 16". - Odorless solvent such as Turpenoid or Gamsol, at least 16 oz. - 2 clear glass jars with screw-on lids, recycled is fine. - Roll of paper towels. - Reference photo (flowers, landscape, still life).
