You don’t need to be a United States citizen to join our college family. If you are a non-United States citizen residing or intending to reside as a non-immigrant in the United States, and you are seeking an academic degree and/or a F-1 student visa, we are happy to help you become a student with us.
- Applying Outside US – This applies if you reside outside the United States and want to apply to receive an I-20. With this I-20, you will then apply for an F-1 student visa to attend Craven Community College and study as a full-time student.
- Transfer Active I-20 – This applies if you are in the United States studying at an institution with a current I-20, and you want to apply to Craven Community College to transfer your I-20 to study as a full-time student.
- Change of Status – This applies if you are currently in the United States with an immigration status but want to apply to receive an I-20. With this I-20, you will apply with US Customs and Immigration Services for a change of status from your current status to F-1 student visa. If the change is approved, you then plan to study at Craven Community College as a full-time student. We do not have an application deadline for an applicant to receive an I-20 to apply for a change of status.

How to Apply
RDS is used to determine the tuition rate a student will pay to attend a North Carolina college or university. As an F-1 student, the state of North Carolina requires us to apply out of state tuition rates.
Complete a general admissions application. Once completed, email us to let us know.
In order to attend Craven Community College, you must provide proof that you have completed a secondary school that is equivalent to a high school education within the United States. You can also submit your post-secondary transcripts to receive transfer credit and waive any placement test requirements.
High school or secondary transcript (required for all students)
- Contact our Admissions Team for further instructions.
- Transcripts not written in English must include a certified English translation
- All transcripts must include a definitive graduation date
Post-secondary transcripts
- All transcripts must be evaluated by one of the agencies listed on the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services website
- The evaluating agency must send their results directly to our school, or they can be delivered in person in a sealed envelope
You must demonstrate English proficiency through one of the following:
- Transferable English composition course: must be completed at a US college or university with a minimum grade of “C” or better grade
- Native English speaker: Must be documented by high school or college transcript
- Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) with a minimum score of 500 on the paper-based test, 173 on the computer-based test, or 59-60 TOEFL iBT for academic admission
- Duolingo English Test with a minimum score of 85
You must be financially self-supporting while studying in the United States. You may choose to use a sponsor or study as an independent student. You are considered to be independent if you are using your own income to provide 100% of your support while staying within the United States. This includes room and boarding expenses.
If staying with a sponsor, you must complete the I-134 (Affidavit of Support) form and attach an original letter(s) from each sponsor’s bank. The letter(s) must be printed on bank stationary and reflect that the current account balance is at least $16,400. If other dependents will accompany you, you must include an additional $5,000 for your spouse and $2,000 per child. Scholarship funds can be used to offset the cost of attendance. The agency providing the scholarship must provide proof of funding directly to Craven Community College. Furthermore, a letter from the sponsor’s employer showing their annual salary can be used as a means of support. This will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
An Affidavit of Support is not required if you are planning on supporting yourself, but you are required to provide an original letter from your bank showing a current account balance of $28,000. If you are sponsoring dependents, you must include an additional $5,000 for your spouse and $2,000 per child. Scholarship and grant funding can be used as a source of income for the requirements listed above. The agency must provide proof of funding directly to Craven Community College.

Housing
Because Craven Community College is a commuter campus with no on-campus housing available, you are expected to make your own housing arrangements.
Employment
Employment opportunities for international students are very limited. Initially, the single source of employment is restricted to on-campus employment, and there are very few jobs available on campus. You cannot work off campus in any capacity without specific authorization from the International Student Advisor and Department of Homeland Security. This permission is withheld until you have completed your first year of college work. You cannot assume that monies from employment will be available to you in the US. Working without approval means you immediately become “out-of-status” with no opportunity for reinstatement. You will be ineligible for any other benefits of your status.
Provide proof of your medical insurance.
All documentation must be submitted prior to issuing I-20. The DSO or PDSO will contact you with further details.
Visit the Study in the States website for additional recommendations.
