The Board of Trustees (BOT) is responsible for the development and governance of Craven Community College. The BOT consists of four members appointed by the Governor, four by the Craven County Board of Commissioners, and four by the Craven County Board of Education, with each member appointed for a four-year term. The Student Government President and Craven CC Foundation Board President serve as ex-officio, non-voting members.
The College President, as chief executive officer of Craven Community College, also attends and participates in all meetings as a nonvoting executive officer of and secretary for the Board. The President submits recommended policies and policy decisions to the Board, along with program, financial, and other resource recommendations.
As an institution of higher education chartered by the North Carolina General Assembly, the College operates as an independent entity pursuant to Chapter 115D of the North Carolina General Statutes (NCGS). This section vests in the Board the authority and responsibility to enter into contracts; acquire, hold, and transfer real and personal property; institute and defend legal actions and suits; and to manage and administer the college for educational purposes. In addition to these broad powers, the Board constitutes the College's local administrative governing body. The BOT is authorized, as per the Community College Laws of North Carolina, as a leadership body corporate to be responsible for setting all College policies and for appointing the College President; purchasing, holding, and transferring titles to all land and property; instituting and defending legal actions; providing for receipt and acceptance of donations, gifts, and bequests and contracting with other organizations; and encouraging the establishment of private and nonprofit corporations to support the College. Board members serve without compensation. The Board meets eight times per year.
