General Definition of Work

 

Performs responsible skilled work in the operation and maintenance of a wastewater treatment plant; does related work as required.  Work is performed under regular supervision.

Essential Functions/Typical Tasks

 

Operating a wastewater treatment plant to ensure compliance with Federal and State requirements.
(The following tasks are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work performed. The omission of specific duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment to the position.)
  • Makes regular tours of plant and equipment; monitors gauges, meters, control panels, etc.

  • Records readings from meters and instruments.

  • Checks functioning of equipment.

  • Regulates and adjusts motors, pumps, sluice gates, blowers, valves and other apparatus to meet changing operating conditions.

  • Enters data into computer to interrogate different parts of the plant.

  • Changes speed of pumps; opens and closes storm well sluice gate.

  • Changes chemical drums using hand truck; changes chlorine tanks.

  • Collects samples of raw sewage, primary treatment effluent and grit.

  • Skims grease from settling tanks; pumps sludge, drains tanks, changes clarifiers.

  • Cleans and services pumps, motors and other equipment.

  • Makes minor or emergency repairs; performs minor preventive maintenance on plant equipment.

  • Performs general maintenance and grounds keeping duties.

  • Performs related tasks as required.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

 

General knowledge of the operating characteristics and maintenance requirements of a wastewater treatment plant; general knowledge of hydraulic, chemical and mechanical principles pertinent to wastewater treatment plant operations; general knowledge of occupational hazards of the work and of necessary safety precautions; ability to detect flaws in the operation of mechanical equipment and to determine proper remedial measures; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; ability to read meters and charts accurately and to maintain records of shift operations; some skill in the use and care of hand tools; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates.

 

Requirements

 

Education and Experience
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school and some experience in the operation and maintenance of machinery and equipment in a wastewater treatment plant.

 


Additional Requirements:
 

Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator I -
Possession of Grade I Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator license issued by the State of North Carolina or must obtain within six months of employment. Possession of an appropriate driver's license valid in the State of North Carolina.
 
Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator II -  
Possession of Grade II Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator license issued by the State of North Carolina. Possession of an appropriate driver's license valid in the State of North Carolina.  
 
Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator III -  
Possession of Grade III Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator license issued by the State of North Carolina. Possession of an appropriate driver's license valid in the State of North Carolina.  
 
Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator IV -
Possession of Grade IV Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator, and a Land Application of Residuals license issued by the State of North Carolina. Possession of an appropriate driver's license valid in the State of North Carolina.
