Learn entry-level veterinary care to assist in various settings, including basic grooming and handling skills as a Veterinary Assistant. Flexible scheduling for daytime internships (Monday-Saturday) as facilities become available.

This course is designed for instructional areas related to a veterinarian practice. Each student enrolled in this section is expected to attend all the meeting times and location listed below. The online work may be done anytime during the week, and the number of hours listed indicate how much time a student should anticipate it taking to complete the online assignments each week. Courses with both classroom and clinical components, have additional times listed for the clinical dates, which are located off campus.

Program Requirements

  • High School graduation/GED Completion. Submit copy to instructor
  • Ability to lift greater than 20 lbs and stand for an extended period of time
  • Professional scrubs. Scrub top is student's choice and animal prints are allowed
  • Foot wear. Instructor will provide details regarding approved foot wear
  • Student Health Form. Read pages 1-3 and complete pages 4-6
  • Current Tetanus vaccination with documentation due to instructor at the first class session
  • Hepatitis B series started
    • Shot 1 administered
    • Shot 2 administered 30 days later
    • Shot 3 administered 5 months later
  • Background check (CBC) will be required. This must be completed no later than one week prior to class start date. Background check results are submitted to the college electronically from Castle Branch
  • Textbook Information: Elsevier's Veterinary Assisting Textbook 3rd Edition by Margi Sirois EdD MS RVT CVT LAT VTES (ISBN-13 978-0323681452)
  • Watch with second hand
  • Email and internet connection mandatory for online work and communication
  • 1-inch binder
  • Optional to practice at home: stuffed animal 15 inches or taller
