America's Boating Course

This course will be offered by Cape Lookout Sail and Power Squadron, America's Boating Club. This course builds on the material presented in America's Boating Course with six in-depth seminars covering the skills you need to operate your boat (sail or power) with skill and confidence. There will be instruction covering the rules of the "road," docking and undocking, anchoring, emergencies on board, and knots/line handling.

If you are already a boater, this course will reinforce what you know and increase your boating knowledge and enjoyment. You will also receive a 200-page text covering all the course material in more detail, in addition to a certificate from the United States Power Squadron (USPS).

This course is conducted by the Cape Lookout Squadron of the United States Power Squadrons. It will provide basic boating knowledge education, including both Federal and North Carolina State required education. A traditional classroom education format will be used. Learning is facilitated with use of the America’s Boating Course student manual (included in cost), nautical teaching aids, and supportive PowerPoint (PPT) visual aids. The 16-hour program spans two Saturdays, beginning at 8 am and ending at 4 pm. Instruction gives you the basics you need to enjoy your time on the water safely and includes navigation, nautical charts, digital charting, and chart plotting. This format meets the standards set by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and the National Association of Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA).

About the Community Enrichment Program

The Community Enrichment Program (CEP) at Craven Community College provides a diverse array of non-credit, short-term, and affordable courses. Classes are open to anyone who wants to keep learning while having fun! Topics offered are based on community input and range in skill levels from beginner to advanced. Classes can take place in one session or span several weeks. Please note: CEP classes cannot be used for credit toward any of our degree programs.

Students may receive a full refund if a CEP class is canceled by Craven CC prior to the start date, or the student withdraws from the class before the start date. Complete details about CEP refunds are available in the Workforce Development section of the academic catalog.
