Occupational Summary

The Accounting Assistant- Cashier is responsible for performing a variety of diversified duties exercising independent judgment, with the principal focus on processing cash receipts in a timely manner, petty cash disbursements, vending refunds, and other areas of Financial Services as needed. 

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

 

  • Receives, verifies, records and issues receipts for all College cash collections; prepares balancing sheet for daily closeout
  • Processes in person, electronic and phone payments for registration and various fees
  • Receives and processes requests for petty cash reimbursements in a timely manner
  • Receives and processes vending refunds; maintains logs of refunds and collects amounts paid out from appropriate vendors
  • Performs monthly audits of cash bags for Barbering, Esthetics, Library, Cosmetology, Massage Therapy
  • Assists with various accounting tasks and provides assistance to colleagues within the office
  • Provides customer service regarding collection issues
  • Works with the Student Accounts Office to ensure non-active accounts are sent to collections and the NC Department of Revenue debt setoff program
  • Distributes receipts, reports and various checks to appropriate recipients
  • Performs a variety of customer service and clerical work requiring general knowledge of fee collection and cashiering activities
  • Assists with maintaining a variety of financial records related to fee collection
  • Assists students with account, payment plan and refund questions
  • Provides information and assistance to internal and external customers through email, walk-in and telephone
  • Participates in appropriate committees and task forces as assigned
  • Performs other job-related duties and projects as assigned in support of the College's mission, core values and goals

 

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent.

Two (2) years' professional work experience handling cash and deposits.

Preferred:
Associate's degree in Accounting from a regionally accredited institution of higher learning.

Colleague experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge

  • Methods, techniques and practices of clerical and computerized report preparation, record keeping and filing systems, and auditing
  • Basic accounting and bookkeeping terminology and practices


 

Skills

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office which includes Word and Excel, and operation of standard office equipment, including a 10-key calculator
  • Understand and apply specific instructions and procedures, current guidelines, system updates and revisions, and policy changes
  • Proficient recording, compiling, summarizing and analyzing data
  • Effectively manage time and prioritize tasks

  • Communicate effectively, both written and orally
  • Effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients and other employees of the organization
  • Add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals
