For Adam Heckman, a graduate of the Craven Community College Automotive Systems Technology degree program, his education immediately translated into success on the job. That hands-on training launched a successful, decade-long career that has kept him at the same dealership.

A valued employee at Trent Cadillac for 10 years now, Adam credits the program for setting the standard of professional excellence he upholds today.

"My experience in the automotive program was challenging and rewarding," he said. "The hands-on training allowed me to apply what I learned in the classroom directly to real vehicles."

This approach went deeper than just turning wrenches. It taught him the discipline required for a long-term career.

"The program emphasized safety, precision, and attention to detail—skills that I use every day on the job," he explained. "Through hands-on training, I learned how to diagnose and repair a wide range of automotive systems."

Working alongside classmates on diagnostics and repairs also built essential soft skills. Adam noted that the instructors were "knowledgeable, supportive, and genuinely invested in my success," often sharing valuable real-world insights from the industry, which helped him develop critical teamwork and problem-solving abilities.

"Overall, the program gave me a solid technical foundation, a better understanding of industry expectations, and the motivation to continue growing in the automotive field," he said.

Craven CC's Automotive Systems Technology program provides comprehensive training in everything from engine repair and brakes to electrical systems and diagnostics, ensuring graduates are ready for professional technician positions.

For anyone passionate about cars or who simply enjoys working with their hands but feels hesitant about enrolling, Adam encourages them to give it a chance.

"The program is designed to help you learn from the ground up," he said. "You don’t need to be an expert on day one, you just need the willingness to learn. The instructors and classmates become a strong support system, and you’ll never feel like you’re navigating it alone. If you’re passionate about cars or enjoy working with your hands, it’s absolutely worth it. You might be surprised at how much you enjoy it and how far it can take you."
