Scholarships and funding opportunities are available to most students. Public Safety students (fire, EMS, paramedic, law enforcement) may be eligible for 100% fee waivers after registering for classes. This 500-clock hour course is designed for students to ride with local rescue squads or ambulance services to hone the skills learned in the classroom. The North Carolina Office of Emergency Medical Sciences requires this of all paramedic students. Students who complete our Paramedic certificate program may be eligible to transfer credits into Carteret Community College’s Associate in Applied Science in Emergency Medical Science Bridge degree program.

This 660-clock hour course must follow the guidelines established by the NC Office of EMS. The Office of EMS must approve courses that include portions delivered via distance education. The curriculum for the Paramedic educational program shall be the 2009, or most current release of the United States Department of Transportation (US DOT) National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) National Education Standards. The Paramedic program must be conducted by an approved Advanced Educational Institution as defined in the rules of the North Carolina Medical Care Commission. The lead instructor for the Paramedic educational program must be a NC credentialed Level II EMS Instructor at the Paramedic level as defined in the rules of the North Carolina Medical Care Commission. Student prerequisites: A) Successful completion of an EMT educational program. Though a current and valid Credential is not required, an Educational Institution maintains the right to include this as a Prerequisite. B) High school diploma or high school equivalent; C) Reading comprehension and English language skills on the post-secondary level. D) Compliance with the mathematical skills on the post- secondary level E) Anatomy and Physiology (Minimum EMS-3000).

The P.A.L.S. course is designed to certify Emergency Medical Personnel in Pediatric Advanced Life Support through the American Heart Association. This course teaches the proper evaluation and treatment of a pediatric patient in cardiopulmonary arrest. Upon successful completion, the student will be awarded P.A.L.S. certification from the American Heart Association. Pre-requisite: It is desirable but not required that an ALS certification be held.

This course is designed to provide instruction in the technical procedures for preparing and dispensing drugs in the hospital and retail settings under supervision of a registered pharmacist. Topics include drug packaging and labeling, out-patient dispensing, hospital dispensing procedures, controlled substance procedures, inventory control, and non-sterile compounding. Upon completion, students should be able to perform basic supervised dispensing techniques in a variety of pharmacy settings. Each student enrolled in this section is expected to attend all the meeting times and location listed below. The online work may be done anytime during the week, and the number of hours listed indicate how much time a student should anticipate it taking to complete the online assignments each week. In this class, you will create mixed media art using various found-objects and common household items using a gel printing plate. You will build confidence in your artistic ability while having fun as you learn to use different papers and techniques resulting in several finished collage projects. Your completed art project will be ready for framing! There will be an opportunity for group critique and an option for an on-campus public art display as well. Students are required to bring the following items to class: Matte Mod Podge or Liquitex Basics Acrylic Matte Fluid Medium, container or package of wet wipes, various household items for mark-making , a hard surface to adhere collage project such as a wood panel, heavy cardboard, multimedia paper in a sketchpad, or stretched canvas. Recommended supplies: various sizes of brushes, various flat papers, Royal & Langnickel Acrylic Paint tubes from Walmart (your color of choice) or Apple barrel Acrylic Craft Paint set (your color of choice). All other supplies are provided by instructor for use during class.

This course provides participants with communication and interprersonal skills proven to help de-escalate volatile and potentially volatile situations. Topics include improving communication skills, defusing potentially volatile verbal encounters; the significance of non-verbal communication, empathy, and paraphrasing skills; and the concept of citizen and officer safety first. Course fee is waived for sworn/affiliated law enforcement officers.
