This is a 40-hour refresher course for Nurse Aides. This training is designed to provide skills that are essential to provide direct patient care under the direction of a licensed nurse. Students must register and pay in person on the New Bern or Havelock campus.

  • Textbook: Nursing Assistant: A Foundation in Caregiving, 5th edition, ISBN (978160425121-0). The 4th edition of Nursing Assistant: A Foundation in Caregiving, if available for purchase on used book sites (no longer printed), may be used.
     
  • Analog watch (watch with hands). Required first day of class. No smartwatches can be used.
     
  • Scrubs: any solid color
     
  • Students must bring own face masks; to be worn at all times
     
  • Active email account and access to internet required
     
  • 100 index cards

Note: If you have taken the NC NAAP test three times within a two-year period and failed, you must retake the course with class/lab/clinicals.

  1. High school diploma or GED copy required
  2. Student Health Form – Read pages 1-3; complete pages 4-6
    • Hepatitis B shots (three required), documentation of shots or titer, bring document to instructor. Students may bring documentation that the Hepatitis B series has been started. Hepatitis B series of three shots are as follows:
      • Shot 1 administered
      • Shot 2 administered in 30 days
      • Shot 3-administered in 5 months
    • PPD/TB tests current
    • TDAP booster or tetanus documentation
  3. Background check via Castle Branch required. Background check results are submitted to the college electronically from Castle Branch. View background check instructions. Background check must be completed (results to the college) one week before class start date.
  4. No criminal background issues (speeding tickets will not disqualify students from clinicals)
