Learn entry-level rehabilitation and therapy procedures including body systems so you can work under the direction of a licensed Physical Therapist. Internship hours will require daytime availability of 24 hours which may be approved for meeting the Craven Community College Physical Therapy Assistant admissions requirement. Course cost consists of tuition/insurance fees.

This course is designed to provide entry-level education and training to perform routine physical therapy aide tasks. The class will cover an overview of the physical therapy profession, the role of the physical therapy aide, and associated career opportunities. Topics include: medical terminology, patient charts, musculoskeletal anatomy, thermal and electrical modalities, ambulating techniques, spine safety, range of motion exercises, strengthening and cardiovascular exercise, massage, facility cleanliness, interpersonal skills, and ethics. Physical therapy aides are not required to be licensed by the NC Board of Physical Therapy Examiners but must work under the supervision of a licensed physical therapist or physical therapist assistant.

A PTT is a non-licensed person who supports licensed staff (PTs, PTAs, OTs, and OTAs) in a clinical setting. They perform administrative tasks, clean and maintain equipment, stock supplies, help patients complete exercises, and assist with the provision of modalities. They help the clinicians to be more effective and efficient. A PTA is a licensed person who implements the plan of care set by a PT. They provide skilled treatments including manual therapy, gait training, therapeutic activities and exercises, and neuromuscular reeducation in both inpatient and outpatient settings.

  1. Current tuberculosis (TB) Test (two-step PPD is required. Documentation due to instructor by second week of class) or negative chest X-ray.
  2. Completed Student Health Form
  3. Copy of high school diploma or GED
  4. Background check will be required via Castle Branch. Background check results are submitted to the college electronically from Castle Branch.
