Netiquette Guide for Online Classes
Netiquette Guide for Online Classes
It is important to recognize that the online classroom is in fact a classroom, and certain behaviors are expected when you communicate with both your peers and your instructors. Please help your instructors create and maintain a respectful atmosphere that is conducive to learning, by practicing the following guidelines for online behavior known as netiquette.
Security
- Don’t share your password with anyone, and change it if you think someone knows it.
- Don’t allow anyone access to your online course. Allowing anyone (parents, friends, spouses, etc.) access to your course, or to see other students’ work violates federal privacy laws.
- Always logout when using public computers.
General Guidelines
When communicating online, you should always:
- Treat your instructor and classmates with courtesy and respect. To demonstrate that you recognize the person at the other end of the communication, address each by name in course communication, always using your instructor’s proper title: Dr. or Prof., when in doubt, use Mr. or Ms.
For example: “Hi, Dr. Whitfield, I have a question”, or, “Rose, I like your answer to that question.” - All college level communication should have correct spelling and grammar.
- Avoid texting abbreviations such as “u” instead of “you”, and limit or avoid the use of emoticons.
- Use standard fonts such as Times New Roman and use a size 12 or 14 pt. font.
- Avoid using the caps lock feature AS IT CAN BE INTERPRETTED AS YELLING.
- Be cautious when using humor or sarcasm as tone is sometimes lost in an email or discussion post and your message might be taken seriously or offensive.
- Be careful with personal information (both yours and other’s).
Email Netiquette
When you send an email to your instructor, teaching assistant, or classmates, you should:
- Use a descriptive subject line.
- Avoid attachments unless you are sure your recipients can open them.
- Sign your message with your name and return e-mail address.
- Always use your student Gmail account when communicating with instructors, staff, or students on campus. Your personal email account is not acceptable.
- Be sure of whom you intend to receive your response when you click, “reply to all” or “forward”.
- Don’t email spam your classmates or instructor with e-mail advertisements or solicitations.
Discussion Forum Netiquette and Guidelines
When posting on the Discussion Forum in your online class, you should:
- Make posts that are on topic and within the scope of the course material.
- Take your posts seriously and review and edit your posts before sending.
- Don’t repeat someone else’s post without adding something of your own to it.
- Avoid short, generic replies such as, “I agree.” You should include why you agree or add to the previous point.
- Always be respectful of others’ opinions even when they differ from your own.
- When you disagree with someone, you should express your differing opinion in a respectful, non-critical way.
- Do not post anything illegal, harassing, sexually suggestive, or inflammatory on your discussion forum. Religious, racial, sexual, or ethnic jokes and negative references or cyber bullying are prohibited. Your comments should relate to course content and not try to influence your classmates to your political, social, or religious beliefs or values.
- Discuss personal matters, grades, and policy matters with instructors via e-mail, over the phone, or in their offices, not in the course discussion forums. Refrain from posting complaints, rants, or problems about the course or your life in the discussion forums.
Technical Skills for the Online Student
The successful online student will know how to:
- Access high speed internet with a computing device that has audio and video capabilities
- Browse the internet
- Perform online research using online search engines and databases
- Download and upload files
- Recognize when a “plug-in” is needed to view a particular web page
- Send, receive, reply to, and forward email
- Send and receive email attachments
- Use word processing software
- Manage files and folders: save, name, move, backup, rename, delete, check properties
- Copy and paste text across documents and software applications
- Save a document or other file to a particular digital location
- Find a file or document previously saved
- Access Adobe Reader, get download
Other skills may be needed for specific online courses or instructor preferences, but mastering the skills above should be enough to provide a strong base for academic success.
