Egon Lippert just can’t say no to a good cause. Even after 10 spinal surgeries in the last four years, his continued community involvement shows that if there’s a will, there’s a way.
Since officially retiring and moving to River Bend in 1998, Egon has been active in several of the town’s organizations and projects. He was highly involved with the restoration and upkeep of the Red Caboose that is still on display today. He helped refurbish it by cleaning out the inside, painting the interior and exterior and consistent upkeep.
Egon’s efforts in the restoration and conservation of the caboose recently earned it a preservation award from the New Bern Preservation Foundation. He enjoyed the history aspect of the project and the opportunity to get involved with other community organizations.
“It also got me a chance to work with Craven Community College,” he said. “We needed steps for the caboose, and the welding shop made it one of their projects—they had the class come out and measure, design the steps, weld the steps and come out and put the steps on, and it was all for free.”
