NEW BERN, N.C. – Craven Community College (Craven CC) is proud to announce a new partnership with CarolinaEast Health System to offer a Patient Service Representative course. This training is designed to prepare individuals for front-line administrative roles in healthcare settings.

This comprehensive program aims to equip aspiring patient service representatives with the essential knowledge and skills needed to thrive in today’s fast-paced healthcare environment. Developed in collaboration with CarolinaEast, the curriculum emphasizes real-world applications and industry standards to ensure participants are job-ready upon completion.

“We are grateful for Craven Community College’s support of enhancing our workforce at CarolinaEast,” said Pam Thompson, Director of Patient Financial Services and Business Affairs for CarolinaEast Health System. “It is crucial that we fill necessary roles to operate a health system with knowledgeable, well-trained individuals and this partnership is ensuring that need is met.”

Students will explore key topics including medical terminology, patient confidentiality, appointment scheduling, insurance verification, and effective communication techniques tailored to healthcare settings. The course also includes interactive sessions, role-playing exercises, and hands-on scenarios that simulate the day-to-day responsibilities of a patient service representative.

Classes will take place at Craven CC's Volt Center, beginning Aug. 18, and continue monthly throughout the year.

“This partnership with CarolinaEast allows us to directly align our training with the needs of our region’s healthcare providers,” said Jeff Schulze, dean of the Volt Center. “Together, we’re helping build a more skilled and responsive healthcare workforce.”

Graduates of the course will be prepared to provide exceptional customer service, manage patient interactions professionally, and support the efficient operation of medical practices, clinics, and hospitals. The program is ideal for those seeking a meaningful career in healthcare without a clinical focus.
