52 Faces of Community: Patti Peebles

College and RCS partner Patti Peebles

By Holly Desrosier

Patti Peebles believes the best form of charity is empowerment. She knows firsthand that compared to people who rely on others for help, those who are given the tools to liberate themselves from constraints are more likely to adapt their lifestyles and hold onto that success.

Patti facilitated a partnership between RCS and Craven Community College and considers it one of the best things she’s accomplished there. RCS hosts the Job Readiness Boot Camp, part of the college’s Workforce Development department. The boot camp helps participants gain job skills and knowledge required to succeed in the modern workforce. Citing its 40 percent success rate, Patti sees many participants become employed and contribute to the community.

“I grew up very humbly, frankly, and I’m a believer in helping people restore themselves and regain their dignity, and through Religious Community Services, we’re able to do that,” she said. “That’s the most heartwarming thing is to watch someone who has fallen into bad times, but maybe even came to the shelter, came through the employment readiness boot camp, found employment. It’s just really satisfying to watch our success and getting people restored to their rightful place where God wants them to be.”
