The American Association of University Women (AAUW) Twin Rivers branch recently presented a $1,000 check to Vy Tran, winner of the Jill Shelley Memorial Scholarship for the 2023-24 academic year. Tran is completing an Associate in Engineering degree at Craven CC and plans to complete a four-year engineering degree with a focus on biomedical engineering or chemical (pharmaceutical) engineering.

The AAUW Scholarship was established in 2001 and was renamed the Jill Shelley Memorial Scholarship in 2005. Shelley, past AAUW Twin Rivers branch president, died of cancer shortly after her term of office was completed. Current criteria for the scholarship are as follows: female student enrolled in a STEM program at Craven CC who has successfully completed the equivalent of at least one semester (12 curriculum hours), maintains a 3.0 GPA or higher, and must be planning to continue her education toward a bachelor's degree. Non-traditional students are preferred.

AAUW is a national organization established in 1881 by female college graduates who wished to advance equality for women and girls with an emphasis on education. The local branch was founded in 1997.
