CARES Act – Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund Grant for Students

Craven Community College has been allocated Higher Education Emergency Relief Funds (HEERF) under the CARES Act for students. Craven Community College has signed and returned the Recipient’s Funding Certification and Agreement for Emergency Financial Aid Grants to Students.

As of February 2, 2021, Craven Community College has disbursed all of the emergency student aid grant funding received under the Federal CARES Act.  To apply for Higher Education Emergency Relief Funds III (HEERF III), created under the American Rescue Plan (ARP) for the Fall 2021 and Spring 2022 semesters, please complete the new HEERF application.

Craven Community College was funded $754,672 from the Department of Education pursuant to the College’s Certification of Agreement for Emergency Financial Aid Grants to Students.

To be considered for the emergency grant:

  • Students must have been enrolled in at least one seated or hybrid class on March 13, 2020, when the CARES Act was proclaimed
  • Have expenses related to the disruption of campus operations due to coronavirus, such as food, housing, course materials, technology, health care, and child-care expenses
  • Be eligible to participate in Title IV programs under the Higher Education Act (HEA) of 1965. To determine eligibility for Title IV funds, students need to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for the 2019/2020 academic year
  • Complete a simple one-page application developed by Craven Community College CARES Act Task Force.  Students will attest that their need is related to the disruption of campus operations due to coronavirus. The financial aid office will review the applications and determine eligibility using a checklist developed by the task force.

Awards range from $500-1,000, based on Spring 2020 enrollment.

  • 12+ credit hours – $1,000
  • 6-11 credit hours – $ 750
  • 1-5   credit hours – $ 500

The estimated total number of Craven Community College’s students identified that may be eligible to participate in the HEERF under the CARES Act is 954. An email was sent to these students on May 14, 2020 informing them that they may qualify for HEERF and the link to the application was included in the email.

Once Craven Community College receives the student application, no further action is required by the student unless contacted by the college. If awarded, the funds will be disbursed to the student based on their refund preference through BankMobile.

As of February 2, 2021, the total number of students who received Emergency Grants under Section 18004(a)(1) of the CARES Act is 399 students totaling $754,672.00. As of February 2, 2021, Craven Community College has disbursed all of the emergency student aid grant funding received under the Federal CARES Act.

The CARES Act allows institutions to use up to one-half of the total funds received under Section 18004(a)(1) to cover any costs associated with significant changes to the delivery of instruction due to the coronavirus. The Secretary of Education has encouraged institutions to utilize the funds to expand remote learning programs, build IT capacity to support such programs, and train faculty and staff to operate effectively in a remote learning environment. The amount that the college is eligible to spend is $754,671 and cannot exceed the amount spent on Emergency Financial Aid Grants to Students.

Additionally, under Section 18004(a)(2) the college has received funds through the Strengthening Institutions Program in the amount of $74,845 that can be used to defray institutional expenses, which may include lost revenue, reimbursement for expenses already incurred, technology costs associated with the transition to distance education, faculty and staff training, and payroll.
