Craven Community College (Craven CC) will celebrate Black History Month with events Tuesday, Feb. 11 at 11:30 a.m. on the Havelock campus and Wednesday, Feb. 19 at 11 a.m. on the New Bern campus. Both events are free and open to the public.
The Havelock campus will show PBS documentary "Great Migrations – A People on the Move," hosted by Henry Louis Gates, Jr. It will be streamed in the Redd Building student lounge, and light refreshments will be served.
The New Bern campus will continue its celebration of the college's 60-year history with an event titled "Deep Roots and Strong Futures: Honoring the Legacy of African Americans Who Shaped History." It will be held in Ward Hall and will include performances by the college's 3CGC gospel choir, plenary speaker Jasmine Canady, and keynote speaker Dr. Dawn Baldwin Gibson. Lunch will be provided. There will also be several interactive information tables set up by the following:
- Twin Rivers Opportunity: Joy Radcliff, Family Self-Sufficiency Coordinator (affordable housing/human services career)
- First Flight Federal Credit Union: Jay Tripp, Associate VP of Business Development (financial management careers)
- Craven CC Community Enrichment Program (CEP): Dr. Suzanne Madison, CEP Coordinator (Cotton Joe Doll, a railroad book titled "The Great Migration,” 1800s bible from the roads that were built through black neighborhoods)
- The U.S. Colored Troops: Bernard George – he will come dressed in the uniform and speak about the group's history
- Bennett College: Maxine Ford, Admissions Counselor
- North Carolina Agriculture and Technical College: Alexis R. Holley, Transfer Admissions Counselor
- Elizabeth City State University: Sherry Franks, M.Ed, Transfer Admissions Counselor
