The Global Initiatives Committee at Craven Community College (Craven CC), a team tasked with supporting fellow faculty and staff in preparing Craven CC students to navigate and succeed in today’s interconnected world, hosted “Increasing your Global Competence” on March 5.
Attendees of this engaging workshop were given the opportunity to participate in events that allowed them to assess their global competence levels, advance their ability to engage in intercultural relationships, and acquire the skills needed to promote equity, diversity, and inclusion into their work and everyday lives. The turnout for this event was great, as 25 members of the faculty and staff seized the opportunity to develop themselves professionally by attending this event.
The workshop was facilitated by Katherine Turner, MPH, founder and president of Global Citizen, LLC, a consulting firm that works in the United States and internationally to strengthen leaders’ capacity to advance public health, human rights, global competence, equity, diversity, and inclusion. During the workshop, Turner lead the group in a host of engaging and interactive activities such as a global awareness and comfort continuum, a values clarification segment, and a small group discussion of case studies on how to advance the college’s mission to become globally competent.
In addition to her role as president of Global Citizen, LLC, Turner also teaches and mentors the next generation of leaders as an adjunct faculty member at UNC-Chapel Hill.
If you are interested in increasing your global competence and/or experiencing other cultures as you never have before, the Global Initiatives Committee, in collaboration with Campus Life, is planning International Fest, an event that will be held on both the New Bern and Havelock campuses during Hispanic Heritage Month this fall. In addition to this, the Study Abroad Program will be taking a trip to Peru in June of 2020. Applications to attend this trip will be due by Nov. 1, 2019.
