NEW BERN – The 44th annual North Carolina Prison Art Show “Visions Beyond Barriers” opens Monday, April 22 at Craven Community College (Craven CC) with works created by incarcerated individuals from 56 facilities across the North Carolina Corrections System. The show is free and will run through May 3 at Godwin Memorial Library.
This unique exhibition will feature a diverse range of artworks, including watercolor paintings, intricate drawings using pencil, charcoal, crayon, pastels, and pen and ink, as well as captivating mixed-media creations using collage, cut paper, and paste. The pieces on display represent the creativity and skill of offenders within the North Carolina correctional system.
“We look forward to sharing these works of art with the public and our students,” said Dr. Betty Hatcher, Craven CC Dean of Arts and Sciences. “This is not just about showcasing talent—it's about recognizing the transformative power of creativity and providing a platform for redemption, self-expression, and healing within our correctional system."
Awards will be presented to recognize exceptional talent across different categories. Certificates will be given for places 1-5 in each art category of painting, drawing and mixed media to highlight the outstanding achievements of the artists. Additionally, special accolades for Best of Show and People's Choice will be bestowed, celebrating excellence and audience appreciation.
North Carolina Department of Adult Correction - Prisons Eastern Region Office was tasked with hosting the 2024 Offender Art Show. Godwin Library was identified as the venue to display the artwork through collaboration with Craven CC and the Craven-Pamlico Re-Entry Council (CPRC). Resources from the CPRC will also be on display as part of a continued celebration of Second Chance Month in April.
The public is invited to attend the exhibition and witness the creativity and imagination expressed through these artworks. Visitors can explore the gallery at Craven CC’s Godwin Library, located in Barker Hall on the New Bern Campus, Monday-Thursday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Friday, 8 a.m. to noon.
