Scholarships and funding opportunities are available to most students. Public Safety students (fire, EMS, paramedic, law enforcement) may be eligible for 100% fee waivers after registering for classes. This course is designed as an introductory course for individuals who will be employed in the cleanup of environmentally contaminated sites in industrial, service or business settings. The course will cover Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER 40), OSHA general workplace safety, quality assurance, quality control sampling and analysis, sampling drinking and groundwater, innovative technologies, environmental site assessments, and various related environmental safety topics. This course is designed to provide students with a knowledge base to sit for various industry-recognized Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) certifications. Students will also gain the basic skills and general knowledge needed to begin a career as a Process Technician for a biotechnology, pharmaceutical, or chemical manufacturing company. Process technicians work in manufacturing environments and have a wide variety of responsibilities in all stages of the manufacturing process. Tasks may include operating equipment, documenting and analyzing data, monitoring machinery, and improving manufacturing processes. Process technicians also maintain company safety, health, and environmental standards. The ultimate goal is to produce a quality product that meets required standards. The North Carolina Biotechnology Partnership provides an optional certification exam to students who have successfully completed BioWork.

This course exposes students to the culinary arts and the associated job opportunities in the culinary arts. Topics include food preparation, front of the house, back of the house and what the different jobs daily duties entailed. Students will explore basic concepts, skills, and techniques involved in pasta making such as dough preparation, rolling and cutting techniques, hand-cutting and shaping methods, creating flavored doughs, preparing sauces, and learning how to cook and store pasta. This course will present the candidate with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to satisfy the requirements of NFPA 1001: Standard for Firefighter Professional Qualifications, (2019 edition; Chapters 4 and 5) and NFPA 1072: Standard for Hazardous Materials/Weapons of Mass Destruction Emergency Response Personnel Professional Qualifications (2017 edition; Chapters 4, 5, 6.2, and 6.6). In addition, this series will include the Traffic Incident Management System (TIMS) training, the Mayday and Firefighter Safety and Survival segments, as well as the Emergency Medical requirements found in Chapter 6 of NFPA 1001: Standard for Firefighter Professional Qualifications (2019 edition).
