Discover the richness and beauty of the Western classical music tradition in this engaging course designed for adult learners. No prior musical training or ability to read music is required. Through guided listening, discussion, and historical exploration, students will develop a deeper appreciation for some of the world’s most enduring musical works. The course follows two complementary paths. First, participants will build a practical vocabulary of musical elements, forms, and styles, learning how composers create expression and meaning through sound. Second, the class will trace the development of Western art music from the chants of the early medieval church through the innovations and experiments of the twentieth century. Each 90-minute session combines brief illustrated lectures, analytical listening activities, and open discussion. Recorded musical examples are central to every meeting, allowing students to experience the music firsthand while developing the skills of attentive and informed listening. By the end of the course, participants will have gained both historical perspective and a greater confidence in engaging with classical music as thoughtful listeners. This version is appropriate for a college community enrichment catalog and emphasizes accessibility for beginners while highlighting the intellectual and cultural value of the course.
