In this four-week class, you will learn the concept of tying differently shaped knots and then repeating and combining them to form patterns that makes your piece unique. You will learn to:

  • Choose cord
  • Set up your workspace
  • Measure and cut
  • Create a chain of knots
  • Add fringe
  • Bring chains together
  • Create a "basket" closure
  • Trim

You will practice these skills by making your own plant hanger and one small wall hanging. Materials are included. Get on your way to making almost unlimited creative combinations!

Please Note: This class cannot be used for credit toward any of our degree programs.

About the Instructor

Rebecca Atkins is a mother of five and an outdoor/nature/simple-life enthusiast. After many years working in a highly corporate field and never seeming to have enough time for the simple pleasures of life, Rebecca left her job to stay home to homeschool her children and travel around the United States. About six years ago, Rebecca and her husband decided to sell everything and move the family to Trondheim, Norway. Their goal was to see more of the world and expose their children to new cultures, languages, and learning experiences. They also wanted to live a more sustainable life and learned to buy only things that they couldn’t make themselves. This led Rebecca to macramé. The home in Norway had a lot of outdoor living space but little earthen yard, so growing their own food had to be done indoors. Rebecca knew right away that she wanted her plants near the windows and taught herself to make plant hangers. Before long, she had a full hanging garden. Rebecca says, “This craft has opened mine and my children’s minds to the possibilities of independence and self-sustainment that we have as a family. When we have a problem or a need, we’ve learned to think how can we fix it ourselves or create a solution. This realization and self-confidence, as well as finding the incredible community of makers as a second home, has been the biggest reward in finding my craft."
