What costs are associated with college enrollment?

The North Carolina Community College System provides quality education at affordable prices. Individuals pay a technology fee rate if enrolled in either four to six semester hours or seven hours and more.

Please refer to the Craven Community College – Tuition and Fees for the current tuition rates and fee(s) information.

Active duty military students are exempt from paying student fees. Additionally, you will need to purchase the appropriate books for your courses.

Where do I get Tuition Assistance?

Tuition Assistance is provided and monitored through the base education office.  Additional questions for assistance may also be addressed to the Military Education Center that serves you.

Am I eligible for Tuition Assistance?

Most active duty military members are eligible for Military Tuition Assistance (TA). However, the Department of Defense has placed certain requirements and restrictions on TA, such as:

  • You cannot receive TA for a course that you have previously taken.
  • If you have an Associate Degree, TA does not pay for other courses at that level unless it’s job related.

Ask your Education Center Counselor for details.

Can my family members use my Tuition Assistance or Veterans Affairs (VA) Benefits?

A family member cannot use your tuition assistance. However, family members pay In-State tuition and may be able to use your Veteran benefits. Also, if you are a family member of a deceased Active Duty Service Member or Retired Veteran, you may be eligible for certain dependent benefits.

If you fall into one of these categories, we recommend you contact the Veterans Affairs (VA) Office nearest you. Select Veterans Affairs (VA) to view the (VA) Website.

Can I use Tuition Assistance and Federal Financial Aid at the same time?

Yes. However, keep in mind that both are Federal Programs and neither program is designed to cover all of your expenses. We recommend all individuals complete the free federal student application. If you qualify for Federal Financial Aid (FAFSA), check with your military center to see if there are any restrictions.

How do I convert my military training to college credit?

Please request your military transcript be forwarded to Craven Community College:

Office of Admissions

New Bern, NC 28562

When is converted military training added to a transcript?

After completing an evaluation, non-traditional work that has been earned may be converted and entered onto a college transcript once you:

  1. Complete the Admissions process
  2. Complete one course with Craven Community College.

How do I drop a Tuition Assistance Class?

If you need to withdraw from a class, the withdrawal must be completed with Craven and the Military Education Office.

If you withdraw for military reasons, TA benefits may be recouped or waived. If you withdraw for personal reasons, you will need to contact the Military Education Office personnel for procedures for repayment. All information and transactions occur through the Military Education Office.

How do CLEP and DANTES Exams help in reaching my educational goal?

DANTES and CLEP exams are FREE to active duty military personnel at the military education site, but only for the first attempt of the examinations. You may take these tests and college credit will be considered.

For a listing of CLEP, DANTES and other standardized exams please select Credit by Examination.

These tests are FREE, and there is no penalty if you do not pass them. It’s a good opportunity to save time and money.

What if I want to obtain a certification or professional licensure?

Certifications and professional licensure exams are provided at the military education site. For test availability and online registration please go to www.pearsonvue.com/military.

For additional information on CLEP/DANTES/Pearson Vue, please contact Megan Johnson, Site Manager, National Testing Center, (252) 444-1862.

If I have not decided on an educational goal or objective, whom do I contact?

Craven Community College has qualified personnel who can help you determine your educational goals.

Contact us at 252-444-6002 or 252-444-6012 and we can assist you in your career planning.

What is a SOC agreement and how do I get one?  Can family members participate?

SOC is the acronym for Servicemembers Opportunity College. This program was developed to assist Active Duty Military and their family members in their quest for a college degree. Prior to the inception of this program, military individuals were continually having to meet admissions and residency requirements with different schools. The requirements for graduation were all different, and the military individual ended up taking coursework needed at one school that would not be needed or would not transfer to another school.

This program allows service members to select ONE college as his/her home school to:

  • Meet the admissions requirements;
  • Meet the residency requirements of that school;
  • Then be transferred around the world and continue to work on the degree with that home school.

A consortium of schools offer courses that are transferable with guarantees in certain programs. Once a military individual has been approved, he/she can take course work around the world with other SOC schools and transfer the work back to the home school. The student can graduate from the home college once all coursework has been completed. At each visiting college, the student can determine appropriate classes needed by looking in the SOC handbook to determine equivalent college courses.

What happens regarding the cost of tuition if I am reassigned outside of North Carolina, retire or receive honorable discharge from the military service?

In the event the active duty member of the armed services is reassigned outside of North Carolina or retires, the member shall continue to be eligible for the in-State tuition rate and applicable mandatory fees so long as the member is continuously enrolled in the degree or other program in which the member was enrolled at the time the member is reassigned. In the event that the active duty member of the armed services receives an Honorable Discharge from military service, the member shall continue to be eligible for the in-state tuition rate and applicable mandatory fees so long as the member establishes residency in North Carolina within 30 days after the discharge and is continuously enrolled in the degree or other program in which the member is enrolled at the time the member is discharged. This benefit is also provided to the dependent as described above.
