The Surgical Technology program provides comprehensive training that is needed to prepare and work in a surgical operating room. This program consists of two courses. Training will include medical terminology, human anatomy, maintaining aseptic technique, and patient care. In addition, each student will assist with surgeries in the operating room.
A surgical technologist is an allied health professional that is an integral part of the surgical team. Graduates of this program will be qualified for entry-level positions in surgical settings and eligible to undertake a national certification examination for Surgical Technologists.
Surgical Technology is a workforce development program that consists of two courses and can be completed in approximately eight months. Salary information from the Association of Surgical Technologists can be viewed here.
Admission Information
Craven Community College’s Surgical Technology program admits eight students each January and eight students each August. Orientation sessions for the program are held twice annually, in March and August.
Minimum Admission Requirements
To be considered for admission into the Surgical Technology program, applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Be 18 years of age or older
- Register for and attend a Surgical Technology Orientation
- Possess a high school diploma or equivalent
The Surgical Technology program uses a competitive admission process. Enrollment in Surgical Technology 1 and Surgical Technology 2 is restricted to students officially admitted into the program. Admission is based on a point system, with students earning points in the following areas:
- TABE 11/12 Math E Test
- Completion of college-level coursework in:
- Anatomy & Physiology
- Biology
- Math
- English
- Medical Terminology
- Completion of an associate degree or higher
- Prior medical training and/or experience
- Previous education or training in surgical technology
- Prior work experience in surgical technology
While the above items and courses are not prerequisites for admission, they can significantly enhance an applicant’s competitiveness by contributing to their total point score. Due to potential wait times between orientation sessions and program start dates, prospective students are encouraged to utilize this period to gain additional admission points.
