Workforce Development
This course will teach officers the practical applications associated with Standardized Field Sobriety Testing (SFST). The SFST is a battery of three tests performed during a traffic stop in order to determine if a driver is impaired. The tests include the horizontal gaze nystagmus, the walk-and-turn, and the one-leg stand. Developed in the 1970s, these tests are scientifically validated and are admissible as evidence in court in a majority of states.
Required Materials
Students must have a current copy of the General Instructor Student Manual.
Registering students need to contact the NC Justice Academy and purchase a Field Training Officer student book.
Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) training is a jail diversion and de-escalation model of training for law enforcement during which officers gain a better understanding of the needs of individuals with mental illness, substance use disorders, or intellectual/developmental disabilities. The idea is to divert them to treatment when this can be done at little risk to public safety.
