NEW BERN – Craven Community College (Craven CC) is proud to announce that its Panthers baseball team clinched the National Club Baseball Association (NCBA) Division III World Series title on Sunday, May 18. This victory marks the first time in division history that a community college has won the World Series.
Craven clinched the title in Butler, Pa. with a decisive 9-6 victory over No. 2 seed Robert Morris University, capping off an inspiring underdog journey for the No. 4-seeded Panthers.
John Freeman set the pace early in the final game, delivering a crucial 3-RBI triple in the bottom of the first inning, propelling the Panthers to a lead they would maintain throughout the game. This was complemented by a top-notch performance from freshman right-hander Rusty Haswell, who pitched 5.2 innings, allowing only one hit and one run while striking out eight batters, effectively shutting down Robert Morris and securing the championship victory.
To secure their spot in the NCBA Division III World Series, the Panthers won the District II Regional Championship. Both historic wins mark the first time a community college baseball team has made it to an NCBA World Series, as well as the first Regional and World Series appearances and titles in the Panthers baseball club history.
The newly crowned national champions will take to the field again for a special exhibition game against the New Bern Southpaws this Friday, May 30, at 6 p.m. Baseball fans, students, alumni, and community members are invited to attend this game at Kafer Park, the home of the Southpaws.
Held as part of the College's 60th anniversary celebration, with the theme "Deep Roots, Strong Futures," this diamond anniversary baseball game promises fun for the entire family and will feature activities and giveaways throughout the evening. There will be free admission for the first 100 people, a special appearance from College mascot Blaze the Panther, and a performance of the national anthem by Jasmine Bridges of Craven's 3CGC Gospel Choir.
