Craven Community College Launches “Building Giants” Summer Camp for Young Innovators

HAVELOCK – Craven Community College is excited to announce the launch of its new Building Giants summer camp, a free, hands-on program designed for students ages 12–14 interested in exploring careers in maritime and advanced manufacturing.

The camp will take place June 8-12 at the College’s Havelock campus, located at 305 Cunningham Blvd. Camp hours are 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 8 a.m. to noon on Friday. Lunch will be provided daily at no cost to participants.

Building Giants offers an immersive experience where students will learn foundational skills used in modern manufacturing environments. Campers will participate in interactive labs focused on metal fabrication, including welding, sheet metal work, laser technology and machining. Additional instruction will include blueprint reading, precision measurement and workplace safety standards.

Throughout the week, participants will apply their knowledge through hands-on projects, including designing and 3D printing an object and constructing an operational model submarine, which they will test for buoyancy.

“This camp provides students with a unique opportunity to explore high-demand technical careers in a fun and engaging environment,” said Rick McCormac, Craven CC Dean of Workforce Development. “We’re excited to inspire the next generation of builders and innovators.”

The program is sponsored by SparkForce.

Space is limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis to the first 16 applicants.
