For two Craven Community College students, this spring semester offered an exciting opportunity to step into the world of real scientific research.

Zeid Awawdeh and Isabella Vega were selected to participate in the UNCW Community College Undergraduate Research Experience (CCURE) program, a partnership designed to give community college students the chance to engage in authentic undergraduate research. Working alongside faculty mentor Dr. Carmela Magliocchi Byrnes, Craven Community College Chemistry Faculty, the students spent the semester conducting research and building skills that extended far beyond the classroom.

Their hard work culminated on April 25 when they presented their research posters at the UNCW Research Showcase Event. The event brought together students, faculty, and researchers from across the region to share ideas, discuss discoveries, and celebrate undergraduate research.

Presenting at the showcase gave Zeid and Isabella the chance to gain real-world experience analyzing data, explaining their findings, and speaking with faculty and researchers about their work—including Dr. Eric Britt-Moore from UNCW Environmental Sciences. It also helped them strengthen their communication skills and confidence in presenting scientific research to a wider audience.

As graduating Craven students in Spring 2026, both Zeid and Isabella described the experience as exciting, rewarding, and motivating for their future goals. Through the CCURE program, they not only explored scientific inquiry in a hands-on way, but also gained valuable experience collaborating with university faculty and participating in a professional research environment.

The showcase itself created an engaging atmosphere where students could reflect on their discoveries, discuss their research journey, and connect with others who share a passion for science and learning.

Experiences like these highlight the impact of partnerships between Craven and UNCW, creating opportunities for students to grow academically, professionally, and personally while preparing for the next step in their educational journeys.
