For Linnea Darr, Craven Community College became more than a place to earn a degree—it became an opportunity to start fresh, build confidence, and create a future filled with possibility.
This May, Linnea will graduate with her associate in Business Administration, a milestone she reached while balancing school, work, leadership opportunities, and life as the spouse of an active-duty military service member.
“I chose Craven because my husband is in the military, and it was the closest community college,” Linnea explained. “Craven also had a representative at Cherry Point that I could talk to whenever I needed to.”
Originally unsure of exactly how she wanted to help others, Linnea chose business administration because of the wide range of opportunities the field could offer.
“I knew business opened the door to many opportunities to find a way to help people,” she said.
Throughout her time at Craven, Linnea found support from both faculty and family. She credits her instructors for always being available to answer questions and provide feedback, while her husband encouraged her through late nights of studying and assignments.
That support became especially important during one of the most difficult periods of her college journey—when her husband deployed for six months.
During that time, Linnea balanced classes, work, clubs, caring for her home, and managing daily responsibilities on her own. Despite the challenges, she stayed focused on her goals.
“What kept me going was knowing that I had a purpose for getting this degree and that people believed in me,” she said.
Along the way, she discovered that her education extended beyond the classroom. Through business courses, Linnea developed communication, leadership, and critical thinking skills that she now uses in both her professional and personal life. Today, she is preparing for the next step in her journey through an internship with BSH, where she hopes to transition into a full-time role after graduation.
Looking back, one of the biggest surprises for Linnea was the sense of community she found at Craven.
“In high school, I was quiet and usually stayed in the back,” she said. “But in college, I enjoyed coming to class, listening, and talking with other students.”
As she prepares to graduate as part of the Class of 2026, Linnea hopes others understand that college can be an opportunity to redefine yourself and move forward with confidence.
“College is a fresh start. No matter how you did in high school, what matters is what you choose to do now.”
