For TyQuann Church, enrolling in the Fundamentals of Professional Cooking program at Craven Community College was more than a step toward a career in the culinary industry—it was a chance to rediscover his passion and sharpen the skills that would shape his future.
Church completed the program in 2024 and credits the experience with helping him reconnect with the career path he always knew he wanted to pursue.
“It allowed me to get re-instructed in the basic cooking methods and knife skills,” Church said. “It also reminded me why I chose this career path and reignited the flame within me.”
Through hands-on instruction and guidance from faculty members Alex Sherman and Meghan Margarum, Church developed both the technical skills and confidence needed to move quickly through the culinary field.
Since graduating, his career has advanced at an impressive pace. He began working at MJ’s restaurant in downtown New Bern, where he spent about a year gaining industry experience. Soon after, he accepted a position as a pizza chef at Harry’s BBQ, formerly known as Harry’s Blind Tiger. What started as an entry-level kitchen role quickly turned into a series of promotions that reflected his dedication and leadership abilities.
“Within two years of graduating the program, I moved up from pizza chef to morning lead, then night shift manager,” Church said. “Shortly after, I was promoted to sous chef, and when the previous chef left, I was promoted to executive chef at Harry’s.”
Today, Church proudly serves as executive chef at Harry’s BBQ, a role he says would not have been possible without the support and encouragement he received at Craven.
“I want to give a special thanks to both Chef Alex Sherman and Meghan Margarum for helping me in any and every way they can,” he said. “Hands down some of the most genuine and supportive people I know. Trust me—you want them in your corner.”
Reflecting on his own experience, Church encourages current Craven students to take advantage of every opportunity to learn and grow.
“I would say, take in as much information as possible,” he said. “Both Chef Alex and Meghan are very knowledgeable and have people’s best interests at heart.”
He also hopes students remember that success often comes after moments of difficulty.
“To any current students, I would say this: keep pushing and chase your goals,” Church said. “When things get tough, just know that means you are on the edge of a breakthrough.”
From relearning foundational culinary techniques at Craven to leading a professional kitchen as executive chef, Church’s journey demonstrates how dedication, mentorship, and perseverance can turn passion into achievement.
