Medical Office Administration

Career and Education Information

Program Description

Available on campus and online

Craven’s Medical Office Administration curriculum prepares individuals for employment in medical and other health-care related offices. Emphasis is placed on developing office skills and knowledge of medical terms. In the program, students learn to provide office support to medical facilities including records management, medical report production, patient interface, insurance and billing responsibilities, telephone interaction, and confidentiality.

Craven Community College’s Medical Office Administration program can train you to become one of these important members of today’s health care team! The program offers students who prefer the administrative side versus the clinical side of health care an opportunity to find work in the fast-growing health care field.

Students learn the important things they need to function in the health care office, including medical terminology, coding, document production and legal issues. They also learn critical office skills, including word processing, text entry, spreadsheets and management.

Craven’s Medical Office Administration program offers several options pathways, including the two-year associate’s degree with concentrations in General Studies, Medical Billing/Coding or Patient Services Representative, a diploma program and certificates with concentrations in General Studies, Medical Billing/Coding or Patient Services Representative.

Graduates of the program go on to work as receptionists, transcriptionists, coders, billing specialists, medical records technicians and patient representatives. Experienced workers have the opportunity to become supervisors.

The program is convenient. Students can take nearly all of their classes online! Some classes do have seated options.
