Craven County Fire Academy

The Craven County Fire Academy provides hands-on learning opportunities to enrich your fire safety knowledge. This 31-week training is available to all current firefighters, as well as anyone interested in becoming a firefighter. You'll earn your North Carolina Firefighter certificate, as well as become knowledgeable about hazardous materials and traffic incident management systems.

These training courses are approved through the State of North Carolina, and all instructors are certified with the State of North Carolina. Scholarships may be available through Craven Community College’s Workforce Development department.

All fire trainings take place at the New Bern Fire Rescue Training Academy, located at 333 Glenburnie Drive in New Bern.

This course will present the candidate with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to satisfy the requirements of NFPA 1001: Standard for Firefighter Professional Qualifications, (2019 edition; Chapters 4 and 5) and NFPA 1072: Standard for Hazardous Materials/Weapons of Mass Destruction Emergency Response Personnel Professional Qualifications (2017 edition; Chapters 4, 5, 6.2, and 6.6). In addition, this series will include the Traffic Incident Management System (TIMS) training, the Mayday and Firefighter Safety and Survival segments, as well as the Emergency Medical requirements found in Chapter 6 of NFPA 1001: Standard for Firefighter Professional Qualifications (2019 edition). This course should be offered consistent with the most current NC Fire and Rescue Commission guidelines; contact the Office of State Fire Marshal (OSFM) for details. Effective date July 1, 2020/2019 Edition NFPA Standard.

Your affiliate fire department should furnish the following necessary personal protective equipment for this program:

  • NFPA-approved turnout coat
  • Pants
  • Helmet
  • Boots
  • Gloves
  • Self-contained breathing apparatus

You will also need uniforms and shoes, and a textbook is required for the lecture portion of the training. Craven CC can provide gear to prospective firefighters as needed.

Recruits will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis until all seats are filled. All participants must:

  • Be 18 years old
  • Provide a letter of recommendation
  • Complete a medical examination form, drug screen test, and background check
  • Complete an OSHA Respirator Medical Evaluation Questionnaire
  • Interview with the Fire Training Coordinator
