NEW BERN — Craven Community College will offer “Safe Spaces, Brave Faces,” a free, one-time class designed to help barbers, cosmetologists, customer service professionals and other personal care providers better serve clients with sensory sensitivities. The class will be held Monday, Sept. 28, 2026, from 1 to 4:30 p.m. in Orringer Auditorium.
The structured, two-hour certification program will provide evidence-based, trauma-informed education focused on creating more inclusive and comfortable service environments. Participants will learn practical environmental modification strategies, effective communication tools and real-world techniques that can help reduce anxiety and sensory overload for clients.
The program will be led by Donell Bryant, coordinator of Craven CC’s Barbering program.
“Every client deserves to feel safe, respected and understood when receiving personal care or customer service,” Bryant said. “This class will give professionals practical tools they can begin using immediately to recognize sensory needs, communicate more effectively and create a welcoming experience for every client.”
The class is ideal for barbers, cosmetologists, personal care professionals and customer service workers who want to make their services more accessible to individuals experiencing sensory challenges. Participants who complete the program will receive Sensory Safe certification.
The program is free, but advance registration is required.
