Craven CC student veterans invite community to support annual Field of Flags Nov. 6-13

NEW BERN — Craven Community College’s Student Veterans of America (SVA) chapter will help honor veterans and active-duty service members through the annual Field of Flags, on display Nov. 6-13 at Union Point Park in downtown New Bern.

More than 2,000 American flags will fill the park, each bearing a tag with the name and service information of a veteran or active-duty service member. Students, employees and community members are invited to help place the flags and tags at 10 a.m. this Friday, Nov. 6.

The display offers community members an opportunity to recognize someone’s military service while supporting student scholarships. Anyone can make a donation to honor a veteran or active-duty service member with their name on a flag.

Field of Flags continues a partnership between Craven CC’s SVA chapter and Vietnam Veterans of America (VVA) Chapter 886. Formalized in November 2024, the partnership helps preserve the annual tradition while building educational opportunities for student veterans. The project has grown from approximately 100 flags in its first year to more than 2,000 today.

"The Field of Flags is more than a fundraiser, it is a tribute to the men and women who have served our country, the families who have supported them and the loved ones we carry in our hearts," said Ashley Silvia, president of Craven CC's SVA chapter. "I am honored to be part of an event that brings our community together through remembrance, patriotism and service."

For student veterans, the project provides an opportunity to serve alongside fellow veterans and community volunteers. For visitors, the flags offer a place to reflect on the service of family members, friends and neighbors during the week of Veterans Day.

Volunteers interested in assisting with setup should arrive at Union Point Park at 10 a.m. on Nov. 6.
