Craven Community College (Craven CC) will celebrate the completion of its Heavy Equipment building with a ribbon-cutting event at the Volt Center on Thursday, January 30 at 11:30 a.m.
The building houses the Volt Center's latest program, Heavy Equipment Operations, made possible in part through grant funding provided by the Golden LEAF Foundation. The program began Jan. 6 with 20 students enrolled. Classes are offered during the day or evening to accommodate working students. Registration is open for the next class, which starts Aug. 18.
“We are excited to celebrate the completion of our new Heavy Equipment building and the launch of this innovative program,” said Volt Center Associate Dean Jeff Schulze. “This state-of-the-art facility and comprehensive curriculum will provide students with the skills and certifications they need to succeed in the construction industry.”
This groundbreaking program consists of three course levels and equips students with the skills to operate heavy machinery, including bulldozers and backhoes. Students will receive hands-on training, learn safety protocols, and explore career opportunities in construction. The curriculum covers essential topics such as equipment identification, maintenance, and earthmoving techniques, culminating in driving skills tests.
The building is outfitted with a simulator lab that consists of three personal simulator stations. Each station has the ability to mimic the operation of a bulldozer, excavator, and backhoe. The simulators allow students to practice in a safe, contained environment before getting behind the wheel of real machines.
Upon completion, students earn the nationally recognized National Center for Construction Education & Research (NCCER) Heavy Equipment Operations Level 1, 2, and 3 certifications. The Volt Center is an accredited NCCER training facility. Additional program information can be found at CravenCC.edu/HeavyEquipment.
Speakers during the ribbon cutting will include Craven CC President Dr. Ray Staats and a representative from the Golden LEAF Foundation. Members of the public are welcome to attend and take a tour of the Heavy Equipment building, located at 205 First Street, New Bern.
