Empowering Confidence Through Creativity: Kaitlyn Talvacchio’s Journey in Cosmetology

For Kaitlyn Talvacchio, cosmetology became more than a career path—it became a way to help others feel confident, empowered, and seen. A 2015 graduate of Craven Community College’s Cosmetology program, Talvacchio discovered her passion for the beauty industry through the impact she could make in the lives of her clients.

“I wasn’t really sure what path I was going to go down,” she said. “But once I joined the cosmetology program and realized how much my artistry has an impact on my clients behind the chair—their self-esteem and their confidence—that’s what led me to pursue this field.”

Today, Talvacchio thrives in a profession that allows her to blend creativity with personal connection. No two days are the same, and that variety is one of the things she enjoys most about her work.

“What I enjoy about my career is that on a day-to-day basis, it’s always different,” she said. “I’m allowed the creative freedom to give everyone the confidence and self-esteem they need.”

Beyond styling hair, Talvacchio values the meaningful relationships she builds with her clients. She describes the bond between stylist and guest as uniquely personal, built on trust, conversation, and care.

“We get to know these clients on a very personable level and really create a connection that is like no other when you’re behind the chair,” she explained.

One of the aspects Talvacchio appreciates most about cosmetology is the flexibility and opportunity the industry offers. From hairstyling and makeup artistry to education and entrepreneurship, she believes the field has room for everyone to find their niche.

“What makes cosmetology interesting is there are so many avenues to go down,” she said. “You can be your own boss, a commission-based stylist, a teacher, or an educator. You can travel all over doing any of those things. It’s not just a one-size-fits-all—it’s a one-size-fits-everyone.”

Talvacchio credits Craven Community College with giving her both the technical skills and professional preparation needed to succeed in the beauty industry. Studying on Craven’s New Bern campus, she learned from instructors who prepared students not only for state licensing exams, but also for the realities of working behind the chair.

“I had the privilege of being taught by some great educators who not only prepared us for our state exams, but also prepared us to be out in the real world as cosmetologists,” she said.

She also emphasizes the importance of lifelong learning in the profession. As trends and techniques evolve, continuing education helps stylists remain current and continue growing their craft.

“In this career path, you have to continue your education and training to stay relevant with trends and techniques,” Talvacchio said.

Looking ahead, Talvacchio hopes to continue refining her skills, growing her clientele, and eventually opening her own salon focused on creating unforgettable guest experiences.

“My long-term goal would eventually be to open up my own salon and create an elevated experience that guests will always remember,” she shared.

For students considering a future in cosmetology, Talvacchio encourages them to embrace the learning process and remain confident in themselves.

“Be patient, be kind to yourself, be fearless, accept any education you can, and always practice,” she advised.

Talvacchio’s story reflects the creativity, passion, and personal connection that define Craven Community College graduates. Through artistry and dedication, she continues to make a lasting impact—one client at a time.
