When Shanyia Howard enrolled at Craven Community College, she knew she was taking the first step toward building a brighter future. What she didn’t anticipate was how much her time at Craven would shape her academic discipline, personal confidence, and long-term goals.

Reflecting on her experience, Shanyia shared, “Being a part of the TRIO program was especially impactful. Through TRIO, I learned how to prioritize my time and assignments, manage my schedule effectively, and communicate with my instructors in a professional and productive way. These skills gave me a strong foundation and made the transition into my bachelor’s degree program much smoother.”

After earning her associate in arts degree in 2021, Shanyia transferred to the University of North Carolina at Asheville, where she completed her bachelor of arts in Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies with a minor in Sociology. Today, she’s continuing her education at National University, pursuing a master’s degree in Marriage and Family Therapy. Alongside her academic journey, Shanyia has also built her own crochet business, blending creativity and entrepreneurship.

Despite facing health challenges during her undergraduate studies, Shanyia’s resilience carried her through.

“There were times when I wasn’t sure I would make it through, but I persevered,” she said. “Today, I am proud not only to have earned my degree, but also to be the first in my family household to begin a master’s program.”

When offering advice to current Craven students, Shanyia encourages determination and self-belief: “Never give up or doubt yourself, even when things feel overwhelming or when others may say you won’t succeed. Life will always have challenges, but if you truly want something, keep striving for it. Stay focused, believe in your abilities, and trust that your hard work and determination will carry you through.”
