BioWork: Process Technician

Gain the basic skills and general knowledge needed to begin a career as a Process Technician for a biotechnology, pharmaceutical, or chemical manufacturing company. Process technicians work in manufacturing environments and have a wide variety of responsibilities in all stages of the manufacturing process. Tasks may include operating equipment, documenting and analyzing data, monitoring machinery, and improving manufacturing processes. Process technicians also maintain company safety, health, and environmental standards. The ultimate goal is to produce a quality product that meets required standards.

This course will also cover all aspects of the job search process, résumé preparation, and interviewing practice. Lecture and assignments will be in person, and hands-on labs will be one night per week. Course topics include:

  • Biotechnology industry and job overview
  • Working safely
  • Current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP)
  • Measurements, metrics, and math
  • Chemistry for process manufacturing
  • Process flows, technology, and equipment
  • Controlling processes and maintaining quality
  • Aseptic processing
  • Fermentation and cell growth
  • Job search, résumé, and interview practice
